Another first-world problem SOLVED!!


The "beep" horn that sounds when you press the door handle with a door open is pretty embarrassing, especially when a passenger tries to close the door by the handle. This is *not* the same horn as the car's horn.

I replaced the honda horn with a cheap beeper.

I'll replace it with something more expensive sounding later.



1) Remove this cover (three thumbscrews):






2) Scowl (menacingly) at this evil honker borrowed from a honda.


It's days of aural harassment are numbered in minutes!







3) Unplug the connector from the socket on the horn.
Optionally connect any other 12 volt device in its place, observing polarity.
For now I used a 50 cent piezo beeper (which has passed stringent QC checks).
Note the wire plugged into the horn is labeled "battery backup".







Noteworthy side effects: a) you'll no longer have to explain to passengers why your car screams at them when they close the door. b) this horn is apparently on battery backup. Normally when your alarm sounds it uses the real car horn. I believe this horn would would be your alarm if the main battery was removed or dead perhaps? No idea; don't care.

Hahah, I really like your posts! This is awesome.. I'm not sure what sound would fit the best, but this is definitely a thousand times better.

Perhaps you can solve the ever-elusive Where-to-Put-the-Sunglasses (WtPtS) 1st world problem for us next?

You could locate a cheap synthesized voice playback thingy - Homer saying 'Doh!' or the like. In my case, "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that" would work.

 

Already solved it.
Remove the cupholders and line the compartment with a piece of black car carpet cut to shape.
Perfect cubby for the sunnies!

 

Can you please take a picture of the removed cupholder insert? I'm darned if I can get mine out...

 

mine doesn't seem to want to come out either.

 

And where do you put your beer?

 

In your hand of course! Why else would you buy the flappy paddle version...

 

Real easy to remove, just grab the edges in the middle of the long sides and squeeze hard together, then lift it out. Sorry, no pics, but can take some tomorrow if you really want. And no, I never have and never will drink anything, not even beer, in my F-Type hence zero need for cup holders! I also forbid any passengers to eat or drink anything when in the car.

 

Nice job! Is there any reason the connector can't just be covered with electrical tape so there is no beep?

And regarding the sunglasses, my impression is that the indention in the side pocket of the door is intended to hold sunglasses. That's where I put mine and they fit perfectly.

No need for pics, thanks! I had faith, I pulled, and pulled, then just pulled in the middle on the front long edge. Voila! Man was that tough... but now free. Moving sunglasses case from door pocket to center console now!

I wish i knew this, this would have saved me a lot of time instead of installing the KP Tech beep module. I though the horns were the same.

 

Thanks a bunch for this DIY - literally every passenger I've taken in my car has triggered the ear piercing honk. One time I did it in the garage on accident and the reverberation scared the crap out of me, lol. Just something that had to go.

Here's some pics and a sound clip that will hopefully help someone else who found this thread through search:



The silver round piece below the red connectors is the original horn. The red connectors are terminal spade connectors that I have folded over to plug into the socket. You can see the white twisty tie above it where I've attached the Piezu buzzer (temporary, couldn't find my zip ties).

Check out the resulting sound:
Still a little loud for me so I might insulate the buzzer a little more.

 

I'm leaving mine OEM. My passengers are usually smart enough to get the hint and don't abuse the door handles a second time.

 

Unhingd, your passengers are smarter than mine. My girlfriend didn't know how to open the door when I picked her up for the first time. Not sure what that says about me, haha.
