I know they said nothing in the exhaust is different but the V8S sounds different than the R. Maybe it is just a result of the doppler effect in this video as I'm so used to the constant sound. *shrug*

It wasn't a V8S vs V8R comparison. It was a V6S vs V8S comparison. The V6S would be expected to be at a higher frequency with a less "whomping" tone..

Yeah I know that. I'm comparing to what I hear every day in my V8R. It doesn't sound like the V8S in the video. I probably didn't make that clear.

I'm probably misunderstanding again, but the sound from inside a V8 Coupe is bound to be different from that inside a V8 Convertible. If you are comparing with the sound in the video, the quality of the mike and your playback speakers will not accurately reproduce the real life sound.

It is amazing how much louder my V6 is with the top down. Even the fabric top up with the windows open quiets things down quite a bit. However, it is well insulated.

My wife accuses me of being juvenile, and she can't seem to understand I can't help it, that's just the way it is.

I'm talking about this. This is what I'm used to hearing of the V8R exhaust being recorded. The V8S above, while recorded more as a drive by has different sound characteristics. It isn't major, but it is enough to trigger a response in my ear. That is all.

I get a woody every time I hear that exhaust... I don't know how I am going to wait until May when mine gets delivered. I asked the dealer for a loaner until then, but they laughed at me...

Great video! The S sounds the same, only a little louder inside the cabin. You don't get the same volume inside the coupe as you do with the convertible, particularly of course with the roof down.

That is part of the game, my XKR-S has high flow CATs and straight through mufflers ... but the F-Type with the top down sounds better as the driver ...

I currently run a V8S and listening to the V8R, I can only say that the R sounds a little 'harsher'.
Whether to do with the proximity effect of the microphone, I'm not sure, but there IS a difference.
Could it be down to the fact that it uses a smaller pulley on the blower, and the result of slightly more air being squeezed in to release the extra 55 or so horses?
Probably.

It's just the type, quality, and location of the microphone, as well as the speakers you're listening on. Both V8s sound identical.

If there is a V8S in the Los Angeles area that wants to join a group of us that go canyon driving every month, I can record a direct comparison. We had a V6S convertible join up last weekend that wasn't even part of the group. He just saw me leading and joined up at the back. Always fun to see.

According to my dealer, the only difference between the V8 engines is in the software. They say they are mechanically identical.

Correct, which is why it is a simple, no-cost "upgrade" for 2016 V8 convertibles to suddenly be re-badged and magically become R models. It requires nothing other than deciding which software to load.

And, unfortunately, if you're willing to potentially void your warranty!

He was referring to the OEM doing that, not consumers.

Yes, Stohlen got it right.

I was referring to JLR making a "no-cost decision" to suddenly transform the V8S into a V8R Convertible in the '16 MY by simply installing different software. However, I probably wasn't clear enough.

I am well-aware of the warranty implications of messing with the ECU aftermarket.
