Default Electronic Oil Dipstick - Fail-safe Ideas

Electronic Oil Dipstick, Fail-safe Ideas

As the title says, please post your ideas for a secondary `fail-safe` oil level measure.

Has anyone tried to send a traditional dipstick down the oil siphon chute under the oil-fill cap? Once a base-line measurement is taken a mark on the dipstick can be made when you can confirm that the oil is at the full mark and another when you know you are down one quart (or one litre) of oil. Obviously this dipstick would need to be cleaned and stored separately outside of the engine when not in use.

Any thoughts? Any other ideas?

Already discussed in some detail on the XF forum although no updates for a while, see here: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-level-190570/

Maybe find a pressurized oil line somewhere and add a fitting and a pressure sensor.

The idea of the plastic tube sounds promising. But I suppose it could stretch and render the reading inaccurate?

You'd have to figure out how to calibrate it too, probably by starting with it empty, then add a fixed amount of oil and see where it reads. Unlikely that the measured depth relates linearly to how much oil is there.
