The vast majority of owners don't bother opening the hood to check oil levels. Never have.

Reminds me of the fully electronic dash of the 1980's. It was quite the fad while it lasted, but proved totally impractical.
BMW's, Mini's, Audi's, and others have no dip stick. I guess they figure the engine should not be using oil and you should only change it when needed...like the deletion of transmission dip sticks yrs ago.

However, having said that, the lack of an indicator that one should check the gauges or maybe it flashes up a warning like the shift procedure indicator or fuel low indicator or SOMETHING to indicate one needs to take a look at an imminent problem is an omission that is very frustrating.

I blame Mikey, the whole thing is entirely his fault.

SWMBO's Beemer has a low oil level indicator, not that her car requires top ups between changes.

Wait...a customer is allowed to actually OPEN the hood? And it doesn't void the warranty? The hell you say...

The Gen 1 & 2 MINIs have dipsticks, but the Gen 3 don't anymore? Sad.

My SLK didn't have a dipstick (except for the one behind the wheel). My wife's C63 does. Go figure.

You'd probably get a light for this...

Also you're assuming that there is no warning for overfilled oil... while there very well may not be; you also may not have been overfilled enough to trip the warning, because it wasn't really an issue yet.
I have a 2016 Type-F R AWD, the dealer overfilled the oil by 1 gallon....yes I said 1 gallon and there was NO warning light. I caught it by doing what the owner's manual said-check the oil level every week.

Wow, at that level I would wonder that they vacuumed out all the old oil?

Ah ha. I think I'd rather sit listening to some music waiting for the oil level to settle than rooting around under the hood getting dirty.

I wish my cars had no dipsticks.

When I check my oil, most of the time I get the "unavailable" message. I know that the engine has to be warmed up and then allowed to sit for a period of time for it to read, but it would be nice if it said "Available in xx minutes" or "Warm up engine first"
