Angry Error Code/CEL Help/Guidance

2015 Jag F-type Base - 35K miles on it, Just had serviced for 3, 6, 9 and 10 year services, including new plugs.

Stage 1 VAP Tune

I went to pass someone and pushed into it a bit, and got up to ~80 MPH, slowing back down to 60mph the car sounded a bit funny and the CEL popped on. I pulled over and a lot of very rich smelling smoke was coming out the tailpipe, and nowhere else. I limped the last two miles home with clearly misfire, ran the codes when I got home.

The car was low on gas, and my original intention was to fill up on my exit, it was 50miles to empty in the tank which I feel like has something to do with the codes. any insight or hints of what I can replace or fix though would be a god send! I'm a bit scared the tune might have been a bit spicy on the car and I'm a bit scared to tow it to the dealership, and now parked, wont crank. If i do take it to the dealership, should i put the stock tune back on it?

The Codes that popped:

P0300 (Random - Multiple Misfire Detected)
P0302 (Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected)
P0303 (Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected)
P1315 (No DTC definition found - See service manual)
P2237 (Oxygen Sensor Pumping Current Circuit Open Bank 1 Sensor 1)
P0087 (Fuel Rail /System Pressure - Too Low
P228F (Fuel Pressure Regulator 1 Exceeded Learning Limits - Too Low

I been driving an 1986 XJ6 for 7 years now and 80K Miles, i know my way around them under the hood mechanically for the most part. The computers throw me for a loop though.

I once ran out of gas, confirming my suspicion that I have a faulty gas gauge, which never got below 47 miles to empty. (It now doesn’t get below 1/2 full, so I use the trip odometer instead. Some day I’ll replace the sender.)

When I ran out, it missed a few times, then died completely. After getting AAA to deliver some gas, I followed the directions in the manual (turn the ignition on without starting the engine, let it sit for 5 minutes, then start the engine.) It started right up, and I don’t recall a CEL or any codes.

Could be an injector stuck open.

After reading around im thinking its the injectors as well - seems like an unfortunately common problem... You take it to a shop to have it replaced or did you DIY?

I got this reply from the Technical Director at VAP: Hello ----------,

You ran the vehicle aggressive with low fuel in the tank. When you go wide open, the fuel flushes to the back of the fuel tank while the siphoning tube/pickup is near the mid-section of the tank. If no fuel is near the siphoning tube, you will run out of fuel at the pumps..etc.

Look at your codes, P0087 and P228F, both confirm you had almost no fuel pressure to run the engine.

Fill the fuel tank and clear your codes, then test the car again.

If you continue to have low fuel pressure, I would assume you ran a fuel pump dry from fuel slashing around in tank and most likely a pump need to be replaced.

*Fingers crossed it was just from low fuel level and you don’t need to replace any parts.

Kind regards,
Christopher Edgett
Technical Director

Im insanely thankful they responded and provided a little input as well. - Going to try a tank of gas first, seems like others have reached out as well saying faulty sender levels from the tank and an air slug to the pump.

Well gave this a try, still misfiring. i don't want to run it too much though to see if it sorts itself. I suppose ill try replacing the injectors next. I'm not a huge fan of getting under the car for the HPFPs, I'm hopeful they are still good.

The injectors themselves sometimes stick wide open pouring fuel into your cylinders. I wouldn't run it. The injectors can be pretty stubborn (they can seize inside the heads), but sometimes you get lucky. You will need a special slide hammer tool to knock them out. Check the plugs before going down that road and see if they look like they have been flooded.
