I would say it's logical but dopey, especially in the US and Canada.
P for petrol, D for diesel, then the number = power in PS units, then other letters to signify such things as AWD.
Of course 99.9% of punters wouldn't have a clue what any of this means, and our Murican friends never use PS.
But it's close to bhp so they think it means the same, although it exaggerates the power a tad.
For example the F-Type R has 550 PS but only 542 bhp but 99% believe it has 550 bhp coz 550 is the number bandied about by all the motoring journos.
