Flappy Paddles
The only cars that mount the paddles to the column are Ferrari and maybe Lamborghini?
I try to be in the correct gear before turning in but of I need to shift while the wheel is turned I usually just USSR the gear lever. It's not ideal but it's quick enough for the one gear change.

I am just not that far from the paddles but also all my paddle experience has been with three Jags and Porsche, they are all steering wheel mounted.
As for the 8 gears, yes they are too many for manual. most of the time you will be in 2 - 5. 7 and 8 are not full forward gears they are over drive to reduce rpm to save on fuel.
I am always in sport and manual unless I have 3 hours of highway at the same speed to go somewhere, then I put it in drive and let the automatic chose the lowest gear.
Been practicing more and getting more used to it, the hint with using the shifter instead of the paddles if not straight helped, and I like using the shifter as well. It is rewarding once you start getting it down as it makes for a more involved experiences and maximises the nice noises coming out the back.
My first experience with paddle shifters was on a Maserati GT I thought of buying a few years back. I had never used them before. About 30 seconds into the test drive the salesman "snapped" at me, that if I don't know what I'm doing just leave the car in automatic. This guy was a really arrogant, Beverly Hills Maserati by the way. Never went back there, never looked at Maserati again.
Thought they were silver...
You can see the "R" on the steering wheel. Paddles appear silver to me.
They never were gold... It was Ignus Orange...
And they're Ignus Orange!
Perhaps they made the change because of issues that have been reported here with the Ignus orange. Several posters have reported the coating chipping off over time, and they aren't Ignus orange underneath.
