It's the dealers that let the car down, not its reliability.

Cars are not sensible purchases. If they were, we'd all be driving Volts and Prius'. I've only had one issue with my F-Type in 5 years and it was extremely minor. It's been the most problem free vehicle I've owned in over a decade.

I’ve had mine for about 18 months and it’s my daily. I average 1300 miles a month, no issues. Well, I guess one issue with the OBD port draining my battery when something was plugged into the port. Nothing else

Almost 3 years and a lot of miles with te S AWD, I use it daily. No problems at all. Also others Jaguars I had were reliable, except the 2010 XKR (at about 50k miles e-diff problems)
So yes It is reliable

How is owning an ugly car that slowly kills your soul, ignored by every woman and makes a douchebag out of you, a sensible choice?

Own a Jaguar and you will be too scared to catch a cold and miss a day of work.

This answer, my answer, was YES in response the question "Is the F-Type reliable?". It was not a response to the question about problem areas. Every car make has some problems, every single one. If you think there are no problems in a Bentley or an Alfa Romeo or a Tesla, I might be able to interest you in an ocean-front property in Saskatchewan.
My ownership experience of many Jaguars including the F-Type has been entirely positive - far better than my experience with BMW and Mercedes.

I know this is an "old thread" and I'm not OP, but thanks for all of your replies. I had and still have, similar questions about F-Type reliability and I'm currently perusing the forum before I ask repetitive/redundant questions.

I am still choosing between a 36-month lease on a 2020 or outright buying a used 2014-2018. I'm currently split 60/40 on the side of buying, but after reading a few stories on this forum (and a few other forums) I am now wavering.

On and off, I have owned 9 cars in my 25 years of driving. However, I've only ever owned one of those cars >4 years. I'd like to have the F-Type be my first car owned for 5 years or more. I can afford to own it so long as it doesn't become a monthly money-pit of repairs post-warranty. Thanks again for your input.

Thomas

You can be financially insecure and own this car just fine- but its not for the psychologically insecure.
Realize that most who purchase this or any other car in this category do so come what may. Not knowing if it will be reliable as there is no prior history to go on.

All that to say if the bottom falls out and you have to sell your car, you will get your money out very quickly, sans the portion used. If you dont have the nerve for it, a $150 battery will wipe you out.
What makes it difficult in your case is you never having kept a car over 4 years. You can absolutely keep this car for life and its well suited for it. Can you start to learn about long term ownership with this car? yes you can, Point being there is a psychological investment required.
Look if it were simple, it would not be an exotic and punks would be driving them.

Psychologically insecure...I'll accept that as a challenge to work on my mental status with respect to this purchase. I like how you worded that without throwing a direct shot at me. Nice!

Well stated reply. I'm already emotionally invested, being here is helping me work on the necessary psych aspect you refer to.

Because its not just you, many of us go through the exact emotions, and it is just that; an insecurity that is not based in reality, unique to Jaguar, even for the most battle-hardened.
Till today! I can work on cars blindfolded yet a warning light or coolant smell will put knots it my stomach. Because we have been psychologically conditioned to believe a Jaguar is different than regular engines- its not. Thats why this engine is used in many SUVs.
Your situation is similar to mine, I bought my car when Jaguar just came out with this engine- its first all new in many decades, and most ambitious ever. It took blind faith, and boy was it rewarded over the nearly decade of ownership.
The easiest answer is- its as reliable, if not more, than any other BMW, Lexus, Merc, Acura. Long term ownership is the cheapest option.

You can “reliably” be assured that Queen and Country will always provide an informative, witty, and entertaining reply. That goes for a number of F-Type Forum members. Oh yeah, my F-Type is 5-plus years old and I’m never selling it. It’s not only been a pleasure to own and, of course, drive but super reliable.

As with any used vehicle, should you decide to purchase one, obtaining the service history and having a pre-purchase inspection can help ease the psychological aspect of owning a Jaguar.

Luckily, my car isn’t as introverted as I am - it’s helped find some new friends.

What would be handy is a poll in the sticky section. Probably up to 3 years and 20,000 miles you'd expect it to be pretty reliable anyway and you would want to have owned it for more than 12 months, so possibly questions like this:

1. my car is between 3 - 4 years old and has over 20,000 miles and has had none or very few issues requiring attention in the last year
2. my car is between 3 - 4 years old and has over 20,000 miles and has had more than two issues requiring attention in the last year
3. my car is between 3 - 4 years old and has over 20,000 miles and really it is a bit of a dog
4. my car is over 4 years old and has over 20,000 miles and has had none or very few issues requiring attention in the last year
5. my car is over 4 years old and has over 20,000 miles and has had more than two issues requiring attention in the last year
6. my car is over 4 years old and has over 20,000 miles and really it is a bit of a dog

For me, my car is coming up on 4 years old and has over 20,000 miles and I had 2 issues at its last service, a leaking oil sensor and the coolant tank (because I cant spell resorwhatever) cap wasn't sealing. But I would characterise the car as very reliable.

With a poll in those terms owners could come back as time goes on and vote again, eg if the car turns to crap when it is 6.
