Default How much do you pay for servicing?

The Jag dealership has changed three times in the last 12 months so it was a new firm I dealt with for my first service. The car is 12 months old and has done 9000 kms. I arrived at the new dealership to be greeted with "you are here for your first service that will cost $500, how do you mean to pay for it" to which I replied "Good morning to you too". My only other experience of servicing a new car was the Lexus, which I still own, and services were no charge for the first 4 years. They now cost me $250.00. $500 seems a lot, a lot of checks (so they turned some switches on and off), checked for new software, new oil, oil filter and sump plug??? They are the local Hyundai and Mazda dealer and now have a servicing deal with Jaguar so I guess they figure they can charge what they like.

Was thinking of replacing the Lexus with a new SE. Not so sure now. Oh, and they squirted water at my properly polished F type so I had to wash it when I got home.

Sorry this has become a bit of a rant. Am I justified, or am I too much the curmudgeon?

No charge for length of warranty. 3 years.

You are completely justified to rant as unfortunately the emphasis over time has been much greater on the "how much" and much less (in many cases closer to zero) on the "service" part of your question. It's a trend in the worst way as the only focus is on $ (or NZD) & cents with, often but not always, customer satisfaction and brand loyalty in the toilet.

Same here. Maybe that's one more reason we pay more for our F Types here in Aus

In the US, the first service is free. I'll be paying for my 2nd service next month - no idea how much it will be.

Yes. At least in the US, warranties and service contracts are completely separate. It seems in Australia, they are one in the same.

Since it's your nickel paying the bills, why not take it wherever you like for the servicing and just tell the dealer to get stuffed?

While it is certainly your right to do just that, it can complicate things you when/if it comes time for warranty service. The records of recommended service won't be in the JLR system. While you can provide receipts from an independent shop, or if you DIY for oil and filter purchases, they may or may not enter those records into the system.

This is no different than any other car or OEM. Never heard of a problem claiming warranty if receipts are available.

As I said, it is your right to do so, and most of the time if wouldn't be a problem if you are meticulous about documentation. Most people aren't, and I have seen some folks run into problems as a result.

All I'm saying is that having the dealer service the car eliminates all possible kinks, because the records are in the JLR system.

I'm not advocating one approach over the other, just trying to provide some useful info.

Disappointing. BMW/MINI provides 36 month free service schedules and 48 month/ 50k mile warranties. Maybe that's what they're fixing with the Warranty program (see 2016 Pricing Thread).

Can't be too certain this will happen anyway. Note, Pembroke has not been shuttled to another Jag dealer, but to a Hyundai/Mazda dealer, contracting with Jag to do service work.

BMW, Mercedes, and I believe Audi used to offer free maintenance for all or part of the warranty period. Recently, I believe some or all have ceased doing that. My wife's new C300 did not include scheduled maintenance, but offered it a la carte at time of sale.

Perhaps JLR is considering bringing it back in the U.S. to provide an edge over the competition. It's a good strategy for makes that score lower in the reliability rankings, and as much as I like them, Mini is a good example of that. I think Jaguar has scored better of late.

When I ordered my car (prior to any F-types shipping in 2013), my dealer guessed that maintenance would be included. He guessed wrong.

If you were to take a car for warranty service to a Jaguar dealer other than the ones who've performed service in the past, and the records aren't in the JLR system, a simple phone call to the servicing dealer will take care of that problem. They will have the service records in their invoicing system.

I'm talking about the U.S., where there are many dealers. I have no clue what happens in places like NZ.

I have generally found with other brands that if the service quote is high, you can negotiate it down.

With BMW I remember on my 2012 550i the standard price of an oil change was $199, but with a coupon (which they provide to you on request), the price was $120. I just told them that the $199 was too much and they said they could give me the coupon price.

With my 2013 M5, they quoted me $250 for an off-cycle oil change. I brought my own oil, bought the filter from the parts department for $25, and paid them for a half hour of labor to do the oil change. Basically the unbundled price was less than the bundled price and I took advantage of that. Net it cost me about $150 instead of $250.

I had to buy the 3-year service pack as a separate item. It cost ~£1000, and represents a saving of some 10% over the quoted service cost.

I note that the UK Configurator doesn't seem to have a price associated with this now.

Thanks everyone for your replies. The next Jag dealer is a 3hr drive away, which means a whole day for servicing. I'm pleased servicing is only once a year. I was as much disappointed in the attitude as the cost. Got a text the next day thanking me for my business. Thought I deserved champaign! Still, LOVE THE CAR!

Theoretically, it's more than just an oil change. You can decide whether you think all the checks are worthwhile (and whether you think the dealer actually does them.)

Scroll down a bit for the maintenance schedule...

I think more important is that there is some documentation that they were done whether or not they actually were.
