Coming out of a c63 with the booming soundtrack, I'd go R personally. I prefer the S to drive, but the sound isnt as good or loud, unless you spend some $$ for exhaust upgrades. Unless you dont care about sound, in which case the S might be plenty.

Go test drive both and see what you prefer.

I drove the v8 r today and wasn't impressed by it ,it seemed heavy on the front end and not as nimble as I hoped I suppose the weather didn't help the c63 seems to be alot more direct and abit more punchy?

In that case you could get the v6S RWD, do the pulley and tune (gets to 450hp) and then stick a VAP quad exhaust on it. Gives you plenty of poke but much lighter front end, also very free revving, and the exhaust noise is epic. Unhinged is the master of it, I followed and the result is fantastic. My only regret is that I worked with an auto not a manual.

I dont know why even the RWD R's feel heavier at the front as the engine is pretty much the same, but they definitely do.

came from a similar situation. had a CLK55 AMG Cabriolet, which was nice and could not decide if the cost difference was worth it or not. i drove the V6 first. it was a solid performer and the ride was a bit smoother (more comfortable). performance wise i did not feel like it was a step up from my existing car.

was much more impressed with the V8. the question was which year. the earlier models (2014/2015) were RWD which drove like a hooligan and can very easily be tossed around. later models (2016 on onward) have AWD available. the AWD tames it down quite a lot and it is harder to get it out of line. the ride is a little stiffer, but not harsh. i ended up with a 2016 V8 convertible it was the sweet spot of performance, mileage (Mine only had 10,000 miles, and price. half of the cost for a new one.

I will vouch for the V6 S model, with a cheap budget of around $100 you can modify the internals of the muffler to get great sound while still being able to use the stock exhaust valves.

Coming from a C63 BS, went with the RWD V8R. No regrets. In fact, I plan to stage 2 the car in the future. Good luck with your decision

I owned a 2015 AWD V6 380 hp for 2 years but always wanted to R as I like big torque and HP also prefer the look of the quad pipes. I never had and issue with the V6 and enjoyed it very much.

I traded it for a 2020 R and it’s everything I hoped for. Yes it is heavier but I never track it so not a huge issue as on the street I’m plenty happy with its handling. However the power is significantly better with a great sound track.

There is something about a big V8 that can’t be matched in feel over a V6. Yes you can tune a 6 to get close to the 8 but it’s how a 8 makes power that cant be matched.

Either way way it’s an f type!

Depends on what you like. Best advice is drive both and see which one excites you more.
I drove the V6 S and liked it a lot. Then I drove the V8 R and knew immediately it was what I wanted.

To counterbalance I prefer V6 sound. More sporty, high pitched, sports car. V8 is more like a muscle car. Nothing wrong with that, tho, just a preference.

I had a 2017 V6S AWD for 3 years.
I loved every minute of it. It's very well balanced. It's plenty quick. The sound is pretty epic. It's more of a higher pitch continually growing. It really sings and pops. I've gotten near 400 miles between gas stops on road trips. Honestly, it's an absolutely wonderful car. I have nothing negative to say about it.

I now have a 2017 V8 R AWD.
The increased power is very noticeable, especially off the line. It throws you back in your seat. It is very very fast. Jag says 3.9 0-60. I say more like 3.4 (which has been shown by others in various test runs) The sound at low rpms is a real growl and snarl. It roars, crackles, burbles. It makes a real unique sound when your foot comes off the throttle....like ball bearings rolling around on a marble floor is how I think of it. It can also sound like fireworks or gunfire going off with downshifts. I'd say the noise inside the cabin is about the same (how loud it is) as the V6S....but with the windows down....outside is Extremely loud. It feels slightly heavier, but to me it's darn near perfect. I also think the quad pipes make the rear look more intimidating and wider.

With the sound of the R being louder with the window down, I noticed when I went to quad pipes on my 6 it sounded as though the noise was closer to my window side ear (not just louder, which it was anyway). I figure that is because the noise is coming from more of the side of the car near the windows with the quads instead of the middle of the car with the centres.

I'm not sure which c63 you have but having owned a w205 AMG c63s and now a w204 c63 black series, I can say that the v8 f-type is noticeably faster and lighter than the AMGs.

I am still of the opinion - There is no replacement for Displacement!

Back in'14 I came from a '12 SLK55 Amg. It was faster than the V6S, at least in a straight line, but overall the Jag provide a more "sportscar experience." And of course the looks!
