Default Jaguar offering free update for 2016-2018 models for Apple Car Play and Android Auto

I looked to see if this was posted and did not see much about it.

Got home on Friday and got a letter in the mail saying that Jaguar vehicle's that are 2016-2018 can get a free infotainment update that will give Apple CarPlay and Android Auto along with other features.

Thought I would share so those of you who have those model years like me know.

Im guessing that each model has a slightly diff look currently. The XJ might have that look while we have the one we have. It does state at the top its for all those models.Mine looks like the pic on the left without the buttons on the bottom of the screen. I have a 2018.

Mine's an MY18 and does look like the pic on the left. No way do I want it to look like the one on the right - looks like a mobile phone. My F-Type is a car, not a comms device.

Nice -- so assuming a dealer simply flashes this update?

Says it should take two hours. I have a service scheduled next week anyway so I will be calling today to see if this can be done at the same time and I will post back what they say.

Darn I got my hopes up and then noticed the letter says it's for InControl Touch Pro, which is what is pictured in the letter. My 2016 has InControl Touch (not Pro), which has the hardware buttons to the sides of the screen. No CarPlay for me

Please and thank you!

Lack of CarPlay is the only major complaint I have left with the F-Type!

This post and updates much appreciated. Thank you.

One issue that concerns me - over the air updates. This is NOT a feature one would want - internet connected car, one that has ability to re-write code, is not something I would sign up for. This means JLR can patch your car to be quieter or detune it to make it compliant with some new California regulation. More insidiously, over the air updates are two-way communication - there is nothing stopping them pulling your GPS location data and history.

Wouldn’t this operate like your phone or laptop or TV? Yes you can receive over the air updates, but you’d have to actively opt to install each one....

I get what you are saying BUT currently if you use the app to remote start the car you are connected somehow. Also, in the app it shows the location of the car. There is currently some connection. Also, if you dont put in a Sim on only update with wifi, you wont be connected unless you connect to a wifi manually.

I looked into the ability to upgrade the infotainment system a year or so ago -- for those of us with F-types where there are hard buttons on the sides of the display, back then (even without this letter) I was told that the TouchPro infotainment systems with hard buttons on the sides of the screen cannot be upgraded. I'm curious to see if this latest letter is somehow expanding the scope of their ability to upgrade? Having said this, the fact that the pictures do not accord with the truly older screens (ie with the hard buttons) makes me think that this isn't a broader upgrade opportunity. I tried calling my own dealership to see if this was a broader initiative -- they gave me the same info I got last year but they also didn't know about this latest letter so I'm still curious to hear what the OP finds out.

What's throwing me off here is the date range -- 2016-18 -- I'm not aware of any F-types that would have had the full touch screen display (ie no hard side buttons) in 2016 and 2017? I had the 2016 F-type and the infotainment system in that vehicle was horrible -- so if that can be upgraded, surely they can upgrade a 2018 like mine????

+1. Very disappointing. Definitely a discrepancy. I didn’t think any MY 16 had incontrol touch pro.
