As long as fuel flows, the pump is cooled and lubricated. When it runs dry, the car stops. If you keep running the fuel pump after that, it's bad news.

Old gas is never a problem for a daily driver ;^)

My warning came on today, at 50 miles/10% remaining. Ten percent is not 50 miles, not by a long shot. Still, they're conservative and I'm OK with that.

Another data point. The lowest I've run it down is 11 miles. I think I got 17.5 (US) gallons that time. I guess I was too trusting of the technology, I don't think that I would let a regular gauge get that low. And my low fuel warning comes on at 40 miles.
