Are new tire pressure sensors necessary when changing the original wheels to other wheels?


My Jaguar dealer told me I need 4 new sensors + mounting + coding!

 

That is not usually the case. What does the fault message say? It should say which wheel is causing the problem.

 

Did you move the sensors over from the old wheels? If no, then the dealer is correct.

 

Whether the sensors are old or new, they should work as long as they at the correct frequency. In most cases, if they were not the sensors that came with the car, they will need to be programmed to the car, and the car then driven for about 15 minutes to sync up properly.

TPMS sensors are physically installed on the wheel before the tire is mounted.


If you have TPMS sensors on your new wheels and they are the appropriate frequency, the car will automatically register them but it may take several days of driving. Mine took nearly 50 miles.

 

Like I said, about 15 minutes of driving.

 

I have been driving more than 400 km since yesterday and the error still appears.

 

I think we are all still missing a direct answer from Meister_Kajo. Did you have your TPMS sensors removed from your stock wheels/tires and have them installed onto your new wheels/tires? Or did you just install your new wheels/tires without any sensors mounted inside of them?

 

I have to ask the car garage. They did everything. Probably the car workshop did not use the
sensors from the old wheels or built new ones.

 

It would be pretty shoddy work to not install new sensors on a car that would have them without question. Unless TPMS isn't a normal thing outside the USA.

I think I know what is going on here as I have the same issue...

I had new rims installed on my car in January with 265/35 front tires and 295/30 rear's.
We later came back with another set of wheels, more offset, wider wheel and switched to a 275/30 up front and 305/30 in the rear and now I have a issue where it will throw a code saying "Tire Pressure System Fault" and flash on my dash.

After 1-2 days of "normal driving, it will go away. After a few moments of "spirited" driving, it returns and this goes on and on.

We have reset the sensors which clears it, but inevitably it will come back on, turn back off, etc.

Only thing I can think of is that the tires are not within the specified range. Not sure how else to put that. I know all of the GTR's we have worked on in the past were VERY picky when it came to tires. Front and rears could only be so much of a width and height difference before something similar would occur.

What size tires do you have?
Do you have the old set of tires you could mount and see if it solves the problem?
