Default No new trunk seals without proof of water

I discussed my upcoming 1 yr service with my Service Advisor and told him that I had discovered both self-adhesive trunks seals no longer seal and need to be replaced. This is an item I discovered on this Forum, looked at mine, and saw the same problem.
My SA asked me if water was collecting in the body! I said how would I know that, my car is garaged, and I do not drive in the rain much. I told him that the seals are not doing what they are designed to do so certainly rain could leak into the body.
He said that JLR required them to prove that water was intruding and they would need to hose the car and find water intrusion!!!!
Has anyone heard this kind of babble from their dealer???

Sounds like a dealer who doesn't want to deal with the problem. Bad customer service.

Indeed, they should be replaced under warranty without any need to prove water ingress. They don't want the work - find a different dealer.

To me, the dealer's ask sounds reasonable, you replace seals due to a) road noise b) water ingress. For anything else - just use rubber cleaner compound to soften them up.

As someone with many classic convertibles, I am all too familiar with hunting for leaks and looking for signs of water ingress. Instead of hosing it down, you could also take your car through touchless car wash while lined with paper inside. Any leaks will materialize as wet spots on paper. Take before and after picture as evidence.

I assumed form the original message that this was the problem previously discussed here on the forums, where the seals at either side of the trunk lid delaminate. In that case it is a material failure (poor adhesive used - it cannot easily be repaired), and no further investigation is needed by the dealer to make a warranty claim. They would be claiming for a failed part replacement, not water ingress (which should not be affected by that failure - some water will always get past it). I got both of mine replaced without question just by pointing them out to the dealer tech and saying "These are coming loose, please replace them".

Or did you (Larry) mean the large rubber seal that surrounds the trunk opening?

XDAVE, same as you. You really cannot see water ingress with papers because water would go down into the body under the fenders/trunk. I will attempt to convince them to just replace them without any hosing or spraying first. It is obvious that they do not stick and are not right. I'm gonna get a loaner and I will keep it until I know they have done the job right, but I am already agitated over the "discussion".

I was the same as xdave, just simply showed them the failed seals and the dealer was apologetic and replaced it without any questions.

Did the service advisor you spoke to see your car? I think its pretty obvious water will get into the body of the car? Might change his tone when he sees it?

I hope so. Because of this and his comments about the Infotainment bulletin, it sounds like management has put these guys under pressure to not schedule work that they can avoid. I hope I am wrong, but this will be my first visit to this dealership.

I need to get them to look at that seal on one side too now that I checked. I'll let you know how much resistance I get ;-)

It's madness I know, but common place with JLR dealers. They will not (in almost all instances) and this comes from their customer relations; repair any item unless the damage has been done!!

I proved this when I requested the revised design door waste seals -The dealer would not replace them UNTIL the windows had been scratched.
I argued this madness and eventually convinced the CRC that prevention was far cheaper than cure.
Proved again when I found condensation in a rear NS light cluster - They said that there had to be visible water droplets as opposed to just fog! The OS was fine! Got it replaced eventually.

FWIW, if the dealer doesn't play ball, either switch dealer or be a bit shifty and just pour a little clean water on the rear carpet.

Why are you not going to the dealer you purchased the car from?
