Default OBD port/WayLens Camera

Interesting dash cam that uses OBD port info to overlay stats on to the video. I PM'd Uncle Fishbits who I know was trying one out, but he must be out of town for a bit.

Just wondering if using a bluetooth OBD dongle will cause the OBD port to trickle down charge the car battery, even after the dongle has been removed from a MY17 R-Coupe.

You would be asking for power issues.

What kind of stats are you looking for - speed/coordinates? Many dashcams have a GPS onboard that provides that info all for under $130.

I use this one. It does it all and neatly tucks in behind the rear view mirrow.

I was going to get a Waylens but didn't because of the concern about the OBD power drain issue and because all the reviews of the camera say the camera is great but the mount sucks.

If you're only using it for the occasional track session or club drive then you could just do a battery disconnect afterwards to reset the power control. If you plan to use it daily then as suggested, I'd go with a different cam that was powered elsewhere.

I still don't understand the "why" of this OBD quirk. Is it a deliberate attempt by JLR to discourage and OBD access? If not, I would think that legitimate (in JLR's view) (by legitimate, I mean no ECU programing) access of OBD would be within the owner's rights.

the mount is definitely the weakest link. OBD power drain should be something that JLR could, and should fix.

I think for set and forget, it might be OK, but it doesn't have what I'm looking for.

dont stick anything in the OBD port, you're asking for battery drainage issues

Manufacturers get a wild berth in ignoring documented issues as long as they are not safety related. A drained battery due to a design flaw is not a safety issue.

What kind of information are you wanting to see on the dash cam's recorded display that requires connection to the OBD port? Temps and such? Race track?

Edit - I should add that I am of the opinion that no one should be without a dash cam in the litigious US of A. Plus less face it - cops lie and I already had a $280 ticket dismissed due to footage.

I like that DDPai M6+ as all reviews speak good for the app and the way it works! I might order one too

You'll love it. It can take a 128gb sd card now so that is 24+ hours of 1440p cinematic videos.

I get the Waylens Camera now - gets extra goodies from the ODM - https://www.waylens.com/experience/ Big unit though for the available windshield space. The DDpai was as large as I would go.

I do not see Waylens to feature the very useful Park Guard option. DDPai has some very interesting safety features and costs 1/4th. And smaller, and does not invade the interior of the car will additional screen. While the car in its touchscreen has already time laps and all fast laps interface why have other screens around? I like a simpler, cheaper, and safety assistant when the car is in park mode too. DDPai seems better

different cameras for different purposes. this thread was not intended to shop for and compare dash cams ...but rather some specific OBD port questions. I' well versed on the current dash cam market.

Well, it's 10:52 a.m. my time, and I'm trying to figure out how to get the red light flashing and hazard light to turn off in my locked car, because I plugged my updated OBD transmitter from the waylens camera into the port.... And taking the negative off the battery doesn't do anything this time.

So I've learned the lesson of not being a Pioneer, because Pioneers were shot in the back with arrows. I'm going to detach my negative lead again, for a bit longer, and hope that resolves it. No more OBD experimentation for me.

Edit: Help. Detaching it for a long time does not seem to do anything? Ugh. DOUBLE EDIT: Now everything is off, but a flashing red light on the dash in on, and I don't remember ever seeing it. It sort of looks like a security / alarm flash, but man.... I really don't recall it.

Yes, there's a slow blinking LED that indicates the alarm is armed. Haven't noticed it in years.

Man..I can't see how a passive device such as an OBD reader would give a car such fits. With my XE R-Sport, my OBD reader would cause and engine light after being removed. The answer was to ignore the light for a couple short start engine, drive, and shut down cycles. The ECU sees that there was nothing really to worry about and shuts the warning light off. Perhaps the initial fault code has to be verifiably repeatable for the light to remain lit.

Maybe find a good Jag mechanic and pick his brain on this. Unslovled riddles like this can drive you nuts! You'll figure it out :-)

sounds like you fixed it with the long battery disconnect. the flashing light, as previous poster said, is for the security system and normal. the hazard triangle not turning off has been the symptom of the power management fault.

Owning up to a non-safety related fault would cost JLR too much $$$. It's there, its not going anywhere, and we have to accept it and adapt.
