Default Our Less Than Perfect Backup Cameras

I don't think I'd want to own this car without a backup camera but the one provided by JLR provides an image that is woefully poor. I'm not sure what the deficiency is exactly. Resolution perhaps but it also seems to be very glare-y. I think my daughter's Nissan Juke's camera is as good. Does JLR offer an improved camera to which we can upgrade?

Does cleaning the camera lens help? Don't have a camera on the Jag, but on the other car, I need to wipe the lens off occasionally.

I wish that's all it was. The clarity of the image is poor even with a newly cleaned lens. The image pales in comparison to my 2013 Lexus. I have seen other similar comments online so I know it's not my imagination. Perhaps it wouldn't be so blatant to me had I not previously experienced what a backup image should look like.

I find that the image is perfectly OK in the daytime but is pretty crappy at night.
And that's despite fitting much brighter Cree reversing globes.

OxXFR - supplier/part # for those bulbs? Heard they are difficult to swap. The fogs do help in my driveway from hell.

Sorry Burt, no good for you, you have an R which has LEDs for both the fogs and reversing lights (and AFAICT all US F-Types both V6 and V8 do), and the Workshop Manual says they are "non serviceable". I have separate P21W halogen globes for fogs and reverse, easy peasy to change out for Cree versions.

FWIW: my camera developed a flare a few months ago - seems like condensation or such as I have tried cleaning it to no avail. Car is in for annual service and they are replacing it. Quality Seemed ok before the flare.

have your camera looked at. Mine is outstanding! I had to have original replaced as it would occasionally not turn on in the morning

Default Define outstanding...

Define outstanding please. I sort of agree with the OP. The camera in my 17 SVR makes the image look like a 480p camera mounted in a fishbowl. Now the camera in the wife's 17 F-pace is like a 1080p or 4k image with outstanding image clarity and no fishbowl effect.

So, please, again, define outstanding...

It is crystal clear, yes, it uses a wide angle lens to get everything in. Image is always sharp. Better than my Volvo

Wide angle lens makes sense for the fishbowl effect. Difference probably has to due with the fact that the F-Pace has the better infotainment system (I think it's what 10.5 or 12" display), thus is able to show a wide angle shot without the distortion. Still the resolution of the wife's F-pace camera/display screen is far superior than in the SVR, but, as stated, better than no camera at all. Definitely could not image trying to back this thing up with NO camera at all LOL.

I guess the best example I can give is in my camera view clouds look pixelated, while with her's there is no pixelation. So, again, I'm assuming its a resolution issue of either the display screen or camera?

Interesting. I hadn't given it any thought up until now, after reading the more recent posts. I have driven 3 F-Types. Each happened to be the same model year - 2015. Perhaps the image improved with the 2nd generation infotainment system. However, each of the three cars I have driven have produced virtually the same image, so I doubt it's a faulty camera. There must be a difference between my camera and those who state that their image is great. I don't think anyone would brag about the image I get. It's acceptable and I'm glad I've got it. I'm just really surprised by the poor image quality - and I'm not referring to the inevitable distortions that result from a super wide angle lens. For now, I'm writing this off as being a MY issue.

Definitely have it looked at! What year is your F-type? Mine was replaced when a month old as it would fail to 'start up' on early, cold starts.

I was hoping that this might be resolved by putting in a higher quality camera but I am beginning to think the problem may go deeper than that.

curious why the need for high rez for back up? Do you turn it on while on the track for continuous rear view? what year is your f-type? Camera system is also used for the cross traffic alert.

The purpose is simply to bring the image quality up to the level of that to which I have grown accustomed.

Am I spoiled? Perhaps, but I feel more confident backing up in my former 2013 Lexus GS or in my wife’s 2014 Lexus RX than I do my Jaguar .

I recently picked up a 15 F-type R and i agree. The camera Sucks!! MY 2012 c63 had a better backup camera and my wife's 17 BMW X5 camera ***** all over this cars camera. I will try cleaning the lens but i doubt that is the problem. The resolution like people have mentioned above looks like its 480p. Does it do the job? Yes

But it does make me say "wtf" how can a 2015 car with a sticker price of 100k+ have a camera this mediocre.

I have MY17 R Coupe. Rear camera clarity is OK with good light. Not nearly as good as other cameras in low light. The ultra wide angle makes it very difficult to discern any detail of cross traffic from the rear (pulling out of parking spaces) I look closely for movement, but its still tough. My Honda had camera options of three different views! Normal to ultra wide...along with contrast and brightness controls. For a hundred grand plus car.....the jag camera is sorely lacking.
