Having had a knee replacement, and with the PT establishment nearby I chose to drive my Jag there on Friday. Coming home, in traffic stopped at a light (several cars ahead of me), the light changes and we proceed through the intersection. No swerving ahead, no odd movement, but early in the intersection - just as I can see road between the good sized SUV and I (in other words, immediately in front) - a large object appears from under the SUV in front of me (that car had never moved) with no way to avoid. I'm trapped between lanes, and at the speed we're now at the only way to stop would have the car who is kissing my but end up on my roof. My gut reacted and I started decelerating as quickly as I thought safe not to get rear-ended. You can imagine the thoughts in my mind as this thing is crunching and banging under my car from front to back. I pulled over and did a quick examination at the scene - safe to drive home. I ran out grabbed the offending object out of the middle of the large intersection when that area was safe.
Yesterday after I got the car on the lift and quickly concluded to file a claim on the insurance. Photos say it all. The claims guy was very empathetic. I think I'm happy I chose a $0 deductible. We'll see how good Hagerty is, especially this April when the policy renews.
Several other parts have issues, small gouge and marks on the wheel where the broken plastic brake cooling piece under the front control arm tried to eject the motor out to the side. The wheel disagreed and sent it back under. Several of the black plastic undercarriage pieces have holes in them.
At least until I schedule repairs it appears fine. Sad Days
. 2 HP pool pump motor (I think) 6" diameter, square flange 7" Left front side under-door sill lucky on these lines (fuel?) mangled muffler
The muffler part cost is just over $1800 (retail I think) and a wheel is $1320 or so. I'm not sure how the wheel will be handled, but it has some small gouges in the lip and large long scratches on the inner lip. Since all this stuff is unbolt/rebolt, the labor should not be horrendous. My guess is the door sill won't be cheap. Likely $5K or so total? Maybe less? Yes - will keep all posted.
Sorry to hear about your car and health issues. If insurance pays, well replace the exhaust and side skirts. If not, it should be possible to weld the gash in muffler.
Good to see you’re ok, as it could have been worse. You may have been re ended (injuries) and explaining to your insurance company and the officer why you stopped so abruptly. Your car will be fixed. Please keep us posted on the insurance claim I’m guessing it under comprehensive coverage.

Thanks for the concern on health - it's a good thing the knee technology. I'm very happy to have had the surgery.
Hagerty has 'non collision' and 'collision'. The deductibles on both are zero in my policy (in hindsight a wise investment). As I recall with 'comprehensive' - claims generally do not cause increases in policy cost. In the detailed write-up (complete with a markup from Google Earth of the intersection) - I made it clear I had not choice in the circumstances. I'm not even sure I could have really stopped without hitting it with no one on my but. I'm hoping it becomes categorized as 'non collision'.
Glad to read that it didn’t cause more damage or an accident. I do have a question though...I’ve had Hagerty for my first gen RX7 but they have no problem insuring newer cars? Any limitations with your policy?
Interesting you ask - that's why I switched. I was at my local track one day driving one of the SCCA Jack Track events (co-sponsored by Hagerty), and the regional Hagerty guy came to the event and gave a little chat before hand. After coming back to the paddock area after one of my sessions, the gent wandered over and we started talking. He brought up their insurance and asked if I was with them. With the same thought as you I said I never applied because I didn't think I'd be covered.
I used to use another outfit that only insured 'older' cars. Hagerty takes that a bit different, and looks at anyone who has cars that aren't your daily driver that are special - and they will insure them. He explained that to me. Since my wife and I have a Ford Expedition and 2015 Genesis, and those are our primary drivers - he said I could put my other 2 cars ('67 Cougar and FFR Cobra that I built) under Hagerty along with this car. I ended up switching not much later because the net policy changes were a good bit cheaper. And... with the Jag I have stated value like on the other ones. I have reduced it a time or two as this car depreciates (right now I'm covered at $60K but the car is likely worth around $48K).
On a related note, I was going to drive Daytona last spring with SCCA's Jack Track program. Hagerty sold me a collision policy for the day. I ended up cancelling at the last moment I could because we had a tropical storm that was set to camp out over the track that day/night (and more or less did).
So, yes - if it's not your primary driver, some specialty cars (like this one) they will ensure. And they have not yet stipulated a mileage limit - it just can't be as they kind-of loosely stated my primary driver.
Glad you came out of this in one piece.
Many years ago, I had a similar situation with the foot section of some scaffolding being swerved around by the truck in front. No-where to go and I had to run over it.
I was driving a fiat Panda at the time (Europe) and it opened the bottom of the floor, like a can opener.
Luckily missed where my foot was!
Glad you are not rear ended, as long as there is no frame damage, it is okay in my book. Everything seems easily replaceable as you said.
Contact a good shop of your own and talk to them, especially if you plan to have some upgrades done down there, some shops can work out an appraisal using OEM parts and use the check to pay for aftermarket parts instead.
UPDATE on insurance. Hagerty called me to interview about what happened (their policy). They stated that they were sorry they had to record it, but it's their policy. They were fine with my choice in the local dealership as the repair shop (they've done me very well to date). The Hagerty woman stated that if I go to Jaguar, based on my very detailed inspection and photos they likely did NOT need to send an appraiser. I dropped the car off two days ago - they couldn't get to it yet (very busy) - hopefully they'll finish the estimate soon, get approval in a timely manner from Hagerty, then order parts. I'll probably take the car back while the parts are on order. So far everything is proceeding very well with Hagerty.
Yesterday I had a tiny fender bender on a narrow 2 way road, the road was already narrow, even more so with the snow plowed to the side. I stopped dead on the side waiting for the other car to pass, sure enough, she scraped me half car past, lucky though, no body panel were harmed in the process and after looking hard for damage on both my car and her car, it happened to be her running board scraped against my bottom rim where the camber pushed it out just enough to touch.
I concluded the damage wasn't bad enough to go through insurance, and she agreed without much persuasion to pay me $200 for a refinish.
Yesterday I got approval from Hagerty. It was not a small amount less than the Jag estimate; after a quick review I concluded they were paying jobber price for the parts vs. the retail that the dealer had quoted. They also disapproved the injector cleaning (too funny). I reached out to the dealership for them to confirm that the reduced approval did not remove scope.
I had already reached out to Hagerty for permission to get the alignment done at my racing bud's shop - that was quickly approved over the phone. I had the alignment done yesterday. I was pleasantly surprised with the specs since it's never been checked (21,500 miles now). I never checked because the first set of tires wore well. We noted that when pulling down on the nose of the car, it influenced the toe to go out, so once he'd dialed the machine in, I sat in the car for all adjustments. The front toe was a bit out (I can't related to degrees on toe - each side over 1 degree). We adjusted to a touch in (I like 1/16" in). The right front camber was minus 1 degree, left front -1.2 degrees. I had them adjust the LF down to minus 1 degree. The caster was good - 6.6 left and 6.8 right - I left it at that since it did not pull (the bias helps counter road crown). The right rear toe was out a little - we tweaked it in slightly in; camber at minus 1.5 degrees (non-adjustable) - since wear good we left it alone rather than try and shim. A summary report was sent to Hagerty saying good to go - no damage needing remedy from an alignment standpoint.
The dealer just confirmed all is well with scope and pricing - all the desired work was approved; the dealer agrees with the discounted parts price. They will order the parts, have the 3 body pieces painted, then call me for when to unbolt and reinstall (should all be done in 1 day).
Some of my friends fretted that this took a little while - I reminded them I told Hagerty the car is driveable and there is no rush. I wanted it done right. Hagerty apparently outsources the independent appraisal 'review', hence some of the review. It is important to note that no one other than the dealer saw the car. I hope that since my detailed initial write-up (with selected photos) was exactly what was quoted to (with even more photos) - this was good enough for Hagerty. They simply sent the quote to their 3rd party reviewer who gave the thumbs up with the industry standard rates.
As of now, Hagerty gets a 5 star review (out of 5) on my part. No squabbles at all on repairs. I'll do an update once the repairs are done.
