It says that the EPB is applied automatically when P selected. So really there is never any need to pull the EPB switch, is this right? I only ever used the park brake on my XKR when on a hill.

 

No, it's automatically disengaged when shifting out of P, but it doesn't engage automatically on my 2014.

Correct, similar in operation to many other model Jags.

Essentially true, other than you feel inspired to apply them yourself just show the car who is really the boss.

 

Interesting. Mine only displays "Park" when I set the brake.

 

Me too - when I activate the EPB, I can hear the actuators running, then I get a red 'park' on the instrument cluster. Definitely doesn't activate automatically. I can feel the difference in my garage, where I don't bother with the EPB.

 

In addition to hearing the electric actuator, you can also feel the brake pedal being pulled further away from your foot when it is engaged. While electric, the EPB surely has the same effect as a manual parking brake. It holds the car on a very steep hill well.

 

Me Three; you have to engage the park brake as it doesn't come on automatically. I like that it automatically disengages when you put it in gear though.

judging from the signatures, none. ;-) just providing info on how mine works....figured that it was a given that it could have changed since.

Yes the link I gave was for the 2017 model and it states that the EPB comes on when in P.
So I guess that's a change. I like...one less thing to do and thanks to this forum I've already learned how to disconnect the ECO mode

 

On TOPIx this information has not changed from the launch 2014 through to the current 2017 model:

That is the same as every other EPB-equipped car I have driven. To prevent the park brake engaging when turning off and leaving the vehicle it must be left in N. You can of course still manually apply the park brake in N if wanted.

There is an additional warning you may see:

Bold emphasis is mine, which may explain why some of you are seeing the indicator lamp light up if you unbuckle your belt and peek out of your door to drive into your garage, or before pressing the "stop" button. In mine the lamp does not illuminate immediately when placing into park with my belt buckled - it takes a few seconds for the lamp to come on. I guess it waits for it to fully engage before showing, and if you turn the ignition off straight after applying park and then open the door it doesn't always have time to show it before the dials go into "minimal mode".

The other more specialised modes like roll away detection and gradient assist are discussed in the document DJS linked to in the second reply. That is useful to read for all owners as it explains how to control the roll away braking should you ever need to.

 

There's no question that it isn't applied automatically on my 2014. In addition to the previously-mentioned indications, if I don't apply it in my garage and only put it in 'P', then it's easy to rock the car a bit. Not the case if I manually apply the EPB.


I can't speak for any other model years.

 

If you have your foot on the brake pedal when applying park, and keeping it pressed while you turn the ignition off, do you feel the pedal rise approx. 1 second later? (With your belt still engaged and the door closed.) You might not hear anything winding if you have your foot on the brake pedal when it engages - it doesn't always make a noise, but I can't reproduce why that is.

I don't have access to a 2014MY at the moment, but I have chatted with a friend who has a late-2013 base V6 convertible and he feels the pedal rise. Can any other 2014 owners from outside the US test it out and report back here in case it is a regional difference. (I am in the UK.)

 

My US MY 2014 was delivered in June 2013. I only feel the extra pedal action when I manually engage the EPB. It's sounding like another regional difference.

 

Out of interest, what brake system did you specify? I will add this to my list of things to ask when I meet with my friendly dealer tech in a few weeks.

 

Mine has the standard brakes for the V6S, which I believe are 'high performance' - they're black.

One thing i noticed is that if you manually put the EPB on you dont have to manually take it off. If you stay in D apply the EPB and then just press the accelerator it auto disengages. I was flicking the handbrake switch on and offloads in traffic until i realised lol!

 

2016 MT:
1. EPB automatically engages when I press the stop button.
2. EPB automatically releases (with a very mild jolt) when releasing the clutch and the car senses you are trying to drive away. I still manually engage and release.

The real value to the Electronic Parking Brake switch is that, in the event of hydraulic failure, you can bring the car to a slow stop by holding the switch up. (not smooth right at the end since there is no modulation of brake force application)

 

I have a 2017. It seems to be automatic when you put it in park. You can feel the brake pull back farther from your foot when you turn off the engine.
