Looks like someone hacked up that cover and removed the center sections, and that piece/plug appears to be an add on. I do not think it comes on OEM covers. Easy way to check is to pull off the over and see what is underneath. It just lifts straight off.
That piece is definitely there on my MY21 P450 engine cover. I haven't lifted it to take a look so I can't answer the OP's question, sorry, just clarifying that it's most likely standard on the more recent V8 engine covers

Well...He has a 2016 from his Signature? Let's see your cover with that piece on there. Do you have the gig middle section missing as well? There is nothing under that area of the engine that would need a plug. My cover is long gone after day 2...
Don't see it on the Parts diagram either for 2021.

That plug is also on by MY2015 V6 engine cover.
It sits directly above where the top (of the two) small plastic overflow tube plugs into the coolant cross-over pipe, the problematic two-piece one on earlier models, you can see that plug/join highlighted above the Mina intake in Rock's pic above. It just so happens that that plug/join was the one and only coolant system problem or leak I have ever had, the little tube cracked and split right at that join.
The plug on the engine cover is a soft plastic/rubber grommet which comes out easily and it serves zero useful purpose at all so it's a complete mystery why it is there.
Maybe it's just a carry over from an earlier design of the cover, such as on the XK, where maybe it did serve a useful purpose?

Well, this someone certainly did not hack my cover. It is precisely cut in order to allow air out. Regarding the original cover it does come with the plug. Refer to the photo please. Of course I l looked at it from underneath and it goes nowhere. It is just a plug which prompted my question. As an side, the cover was cut as I long ago removed it in order to get some air out. Since i wasn't using the cover a brilliant idea was born in order to use the cover..... This is what happens when I have too much free time on my hands.

Well...Now we know. Some covers Do have the plug...And it seems to serve -NO - purpose?? Mine did not have one...And it does not show on the parts diagrams I have seen. So like many Jaguar parts must have been used randomly on various models.
I thought all these covers came with that useless plug. My MY18 has it and so did my MY14 XF that had the same engine. As Oz says it's probably there for some historical reasons.
My 2021 F Type R with a build date of March 2021 does not have the plug on the engine cover. In fact it is quite different from the others shown in this thread, having a cut out over the oil filter cannister, different placement of the JAGUAR logos and no SUPERCHARGED logos.

Same on mine as well...Although it is long gone after day 2.

Seems to me that the cover with the oil filter cut-out is much less refined and looks rather crude (cheap) compared to the one without the oil filter cut out. Then again it's only something you and your mechanic are ever going to be looking at on a regular basis so in the scheme of things it probably doesn't make much difference. Unless, of course, you get a bit of a smile when you look in and see the "supercharged" emblem.

Agreed and I wonder why they changed the design. Maybe it's a weight thing. I always thought that the better looking engine cover is surprisingly heavy, which is one of the reasons to why I very rarely have it on.
Rarely? Do you install it under certain circumstances? (Worried about spark plug/injector corrosion due to rain?)
Our garage-kept Cat hasn't had an engine cover for half a decade at least.
Very True!
I am thinking one reason for the newer design was to dissipate more heat and provide greater access to some of the connections/filter. The new cover is less substantial in size, has more and larger openings & cut outs. I think I even recall seeing that written somewhere, but cannot recall for sure. Mine is HEAVILY ventilated now by placing it in the attic storage above my garage
Ventilation is important on these cars, due to the S/C and CAC's location. With a modest 25 HP increase, the SVRs come standard with NO engine cover (just a thin panel affixed to the bonnet) to keep them cooler...
