Default Pumping gas observation

For those of you in locales that allow you to pump your own gas, I've noticed that if I just insert the nozzle and let the pump rest where it wants to, the handle guard of the pump will rest on the paint of the body of the car at the bottom of the fuel filler opening. I have to physically hold it up (or stick my finger in between the body and handle guard to keep it from resting on the body of the car. It does this no matter the pump or station, so that leads me to believe either (a) a bad design or (b) my filler neck is not oriented correctly.

Anyone else notice this?

Unless I have misunderstood, you are inserting the nozzle to permit automatic latching of the pump flow, and on these cars that means inserting the nozzle too far...too far to protect the body of the car. I never allow the pump to work automatically; I have always thought that this would be asking for trouble. Or, more probably, you mean that once inserted, the angle of the pump assembly handle means that it rests on the fender itself rather than being held away from the fender surface.

In any case, this is not an issue of bad design on the F-Type either of the filler assembly or of the fender; gasoline pump nozzle assemblies are "universal fit" assemblies, which means that there is no account taken for the myriad different fender shapes. It just happens that filling the tank on the F-Type requires a certain amount of care so that the paint finish is not damaged. We do what we have to.

Porsche 911 owners have been pumping with the handle upside down for years, not sure if that would give you the clearance you need.

I have never had this issue. There are some pumps where it clicks off after a few gallons (even after the TSB), but it has never rubbed against the paint.

This. It's the bulbous rear end that is the source of the issue. Poor Kim Kardashian--I feel her pain.

I've resorted to either having the handle upside down or just not inserting it fully so it won't rest against the paint.
