Replacing Calipers?
I just got a used 2014 FType V8S, and it came with black calipers. I really like the looks of the red calipers, and was thinking of changing them out.
So my questions: Is repainting a better option vs replacing with new calipers? Any links to some good red calipers for the ftype? Either OEM ones or other. |
Repainting is certainly cheaper. Aftermarket options don't exist at the moment.

Why would you even think about replacing the calipers?
That would cost $thousands, or at least many $hundreds, when you can repaint them yourself for peanuts, less than $10, all you need is a single rattle can of caliper paint. The "in between" solution, still costings $hundreds, is to remove your calipers and send them to a shop to be powder coated. |
Yea I agree, you'd be better off removing them and having them painted by yourself, or at a paint shop. We've done that many times here in NZ for customers, same thing with the wheels. Cheaper to take the ones fitted off to get painted rather than buying the painted ones.
The only thing with the calipers if the retaining clip on the outside wont have the Jaguar script, were as the genuine ones do, but you could buy that part from dealer if you are particular. |
Good suggestions everyone. I guess I'll go with the repainting solution.
Is it just as simple as buying some caliper paints, taking them off, spraying on the paint, wait for dry, and then reassembling? Anything I should watch out for? Any gotchas? Also any recommendations on which brand of caliper paints are good? Thanks everyone |
No need to take the calipers off, just paint them in place, I've done it dozens of times with never a problem.
Clean the calipers first, I use el cheapo spray can degreaser first then turps on a soft rag. Then mask off the rotors around each side of the caliper, no need to go overboard. Then spray on two maybe three light coats of caliper paint, leaving at least 20 minutes and preferably an hour between coats. Keep each coat light, too heavy and the paint will run. Then let dry for at least 24 hours before you apply decals/stickers and/or clear coat. If you use clear coat it must be the exact same type of paint (and preferably the same brand) as the base/colour coat, otherwise you risk dissolving the base colour! I use Dupli Colour, never had a problem with it. Once the paint is dry clean any overspray off the brake rotors with turps and a rag, no need to be too fussy as any small amounts left behind will be removed by the action of the brakes. Here's a pic of the old XFR a few days after I painted the calipers and whacked "R" decals on: https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...fbafc4d244.jpg And a pic of the F-Type after I whacked new "Jaguar" decals on: https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...aa1d1bb906.jpg These are the "Jaguar" decals I used: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/JAGUAR-HI...IAAOSwbqpT8x-V |

How hard is it to remove the calipers yourself and paint them? I've done brake jobs on normal cars, is the f type similar? I don't wanna risk anything and at the same time I trust myself more than any place that paints calipers
|
Just mask it off and paint them on the car.

There are also red or yellow caliper covers, logoed, that just clamp over existing calipers on EBay.

On a lift, right? Would I be able to reach every area of the caliper evenly?
You can still reach with a spray can every part of the caliper that can be seen with the wheels fitted. |
Which paint would you recommend to spray paint calipers or is it better to Brush on color
|
G2 has been the brand to go to. not sure if that's changed.
|
I just ordered the G2 brush on paints. For brush on, does the advice still stand that we don't have to take off the calipers?
|
just pull the wheels mask and paint
|
What color would you guys go with for the calipers. Im thinking white or yellow. Idk why yellow but I think it might look good https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.jag...d538db64d6.jpg

Never seen them done in white, that would be novel, but I reckon yellow would be better, maybe even the golden yellow you see on some Porsches.
