I recently started hearing a noise similar to this (this video isn't from my car, just a random video I found on youtube with the closest noise to what I'm hearing in my car)

The best way I can describe it is a "rhythmic whoop". Some additional info:

1. I have a MY 2015 F-Type R RWD
2. The sound isn't present when I first start driving. It takes 5 mins or so before it starts to become noticeable.
3. The frequency of the whoop sound increases with speed
4. No codes are being thrown

I'm calling my indy mechanic today to schedule a visit. Any thoughts on what it might be?

 

Obviously I think it's a bad wheel bearing, but I want to rule out a bad rear diff. (fingers crossed)

 

the diff always worries me. I’m careful not to abuse the car and I’ve been having diff oil changes done every 20k miles. 🤷🏻

 

While probably not horribly expensive to remedy, I am hoping that it's just that. Diff... get it checked, too, just in case.

 

A tire out of round can cause that type of noise too.

 

He put it up in the air on the hydraulic stand; he was in the car giving it some gas, his assistant under the car with the listening device (metal rod like stethoscope?)

At first he couldn’t get it to go faster than a very slow speed. We turned off traction control by holding down the DSC button for 5 seconds, then we were able to get the speed up.

The positive is, when up in the air, with no load on the rear tires, the sound is not present. So unlikely the rear differential.

The likely culprit with the info we have now is: rear left tire or rear left wheel bearings. The wheel does not wobble when pulled side to side, so they’re thinking tire.

We’re going to swap the left and right rear tires to see if the sound shifts side when driving.

Fingers crossed it’s just a tire.

 

Tires swapped, and no luck. Sound still coming from left rear, even after tire swapped. Indy going to schedule me for wheel bearing job.

 

As far as I know, Jag doesn’t sell bearings, just the whole hub. Replaced the front left on my XE last year (loud speed-sensitive whine) [happily, it wasn’t the front differential, which is what I thought.] I suspect I’ll replace the front right hub this year, as I’m hearing noise again. Only 50k miles.

 

Quick update:

Bought the wheel hub from local Jaguar dealer. Had it installed by an indy mechanic I trust; he said the wheel bearing was sold separately from the hub, so he obtained it for me from the same Jaguar dealer.

He installed both hub and bearing on driver side rear wheel.

Rhythmic whoop noise gone!
