Default Settings for Stereo

Just trying to get some decent sound from the stereo in my new R. Anyone got any recommendations on the best settings? So far it sounds pretty rubbish to be honest :-(

Which system do you have? There's a thread on here about problems with the 770W Meridian. I'm happy with the sound from my MY18 380W Meridian system, all levels flat and centred in the car.

Mine’s the same as yours. Brand new R convertible.

I was surprised the first time I switched it on with all the defaults set. The bass was there but no midrange. Like someone’s put a cushion over the speaker.

I've just got the 380W system, but find it actually quite good. Much better than what was in my Porsche even after changing out all the speakers and the deck. But I do find I have to turn it up a bit louder though to really get a well-balanced sound, else it sometimes sounds like's it's coming out of the footwell.

Try the DTS or Dolby settings, I found them much better than the Meridian

How do you employ the DTS and Dolby settings?

I don't think you can with the 380W system as they are surround sound settings and only the 770W system has surround sound.

No. There’s just bass, treble and sub sliders and a thing you drag around for left / right / back / front balance.

I confess I rarely use the audio system, the music coming out the back is far more attractive.

yes, it seems as if you crank up the volume it sounds much better. I also think that streaming from my phone sounds much better than Sirius Radio. I have yet to try the CD player. I have the 380W system.

I based all my early testing on Sirius and concluded this was the worst stereo I ever had. Then I put a CD in the ol' CD slot and WOW! The bass was hitting hard, the mids were good and the highs were bright. Through Sirius, it sounded like it had blown subs and muffled...well, everything else. Streaming and CD's sound great, the FM stereo is OK and Sirius/XM is just utter garbage.

Good point, but I have Sirius/XM in my RV and my commuter car, both of which sound SO MUCH BETTER than the Jag. Additionally, XM sounded much better in my SO's old Land Rover and new Range Rover. Something in the processor for Sirius/XM in the Jag is off. It shouldn't sound that drastically different and it absolutely shouldn't sound that much worse than a base Meridian Stereo in a Discovery Sport...

My guess is whatever fix I had applied for the rest of the Meridian system, which made a huge difference on CD/USB/Streaming, needs to be programmed into the Sirium/XM part, too.

Never heard of a fix for the poor SiriusXM audio quality, unfortunately.

I know this is an old thread but found the opinions expressed match my own. Just got a new 2020 Ftype R and started playing with the sound system. Both my wife and I agree the SiriusXM sounds pretty bad. FM radio was ok. We just connected her phone via Android Audio and FINALLY she was impressed. Found that the Meridian setting sounded worse than stereo, Dolby and DTS. In the short time we listened Dolby was best. She was using YouTube music on her phone.

At least now she is jazzed about taking a road trip.

You folks never grew up listening to AM radio through a single speaker in cars, did you? If you did you wouldn't be complaining.

More seriously, at the onset of ownership we spent a good amount of time messing with sound settings. (It's the wife's car so I had to do SOMETHING while she was behind the wheel.) I got it MUCH more balanced, better-sounding, frequency-wise. A lot depends on the volume to which the system is operated.

But after reading this Topic, I'll look into the sound settings using the other modes of music, too. (As an example, playing off a USB stick. Would that mode benefit from different settings? 380W Meridian)

I have found memories of listening to the Beatles through what would today be considered a horrible AM car radio and loving it. That being said, after reading Robert Harley's glowing review of the Meridian/Jaguar sound system in The Absolute Sound and paying for that expensive upgrade, I was underwhelmed.
Only having the car for a week I haven't really had the opportunity to fully vet its music system but what I heard last night gave me hope. 🙂 I have never used a USB stick for music but am now curious.
In any case, I look forward to playing with the settings and various inputs on our first extended road trip.
