If I could, a la Ferris Bueller's Day Off - and I've already given thought to the [im]possibility of it - I would love to park my F-Type in my living room. My wife surely would have other ideas but then again she is not the visionary I am (or the warped mind).

The California is a nice car but not worth the asking price in my opinion. To me, the only thing the California has over the R 'vert besides the "badge" is a better engine note (more exotic note vs. "detroit"-sounding note). The R accelerates faster, has better grip, better infotainment system, better stereo, and is just drop dead gorgeous. The '10-'14 California platform is just outdated by today's sportscar standards. Also, you have to come to a complete stop to open/close the hardtop in the California. (A big flaw).

 

As an orthodontist, I can tell you that it is pretty damn hard for me to think negatively about a dentist who has honored me over the years with referrals. I'd say don't do the deal if you like your F-Type better, but don't NOT do the deal based on worrying about what he might think. He'll be just fine. :-)

Don't feel at all obligated but I'd be curious to know who he is!

 

This has turned into one of those "what if my best friend needed my kidney" hypotheticals.

What they discussed two weeks ago, probably over several glasses of wine, means sh%t today. The OP said he wasn't going to trade and I doubt very seriously the other dentist is sitting around, wringing his hands, contemplating the difficulty of the path needed to take to get himself into an F-Type. He can just put on his big boy pants, sell his Ferrari, just like he bought it, and buy an F just like anyone else on the planet who wants one. Last I checked, theres nothing about the OP's F that makes it an impossible find. Not wanting to deal with a car salesman, in this day and age, is a non-starter. I just bought an F from 3000 miles away, over the net, without even knowing who my salesman was, let alone not even having seen the car once prior to purchase. Carfax, hi-res pics, a written satisfaction warranty, can all help facilitate a pleasant purchasing experience especially for a car still under dealer warranty. If the doc wants to get into an F, he would.

Let's all assume now there is no longer a Ferrari California to trade for. And whether - you'd trade, not trade, keep the friendship, hurt his feelings, give him business, be able to look him in the eye.....Who really cares. The OP made his decision and based on his lack of interest in the Ferrari, is obviously no longer seeking advice on the matter.

You were offered $125k for your $85k. Does that sound like the right decision? Your F-TYPE was replaceable... the deal was a once in a lifetime thing.


Of course, when an entire group of F-TYPE enthusiasts tell you to do the deal and you still pass, it makes me wonder if this whole thing was just a windup.

 

Its like finding a wallet, returning it to the rightful owner, then telling your wife to calli the newspaper to tell them what you did.

Agreed, but being able to buy a new F-Type and pocket $20k is definitely better.

 

I'm not the one who would take advantage of a friend to pocket $20K. Call me crazy but I value people more than money (or cars).

This was never presented to us as a binary Honor/Crook scenario. No one on this forum who suggested him to trade had malice in their heart.

This, if true, was a - "Help me out my friend and I'll make it worth your time with a trade in your favor." Which, if true, was essentially a win/win. Everyone has their priorities and according to the OP, the docs priorities, if true, was to get into an F, out of his Ferrari, and as easily as possible. Remember, the doc also wanted to thank the OP for the tons of business sent his way over the years. This was never about whether the doc felt as though he was being short changed. He wanted to do this for whatever the myriad of reasons and was adamant about it.

Only later was the thread morphed into a good vs evil, "What Would You Do?" reality post. We all value our friendships just as much as you do regardless of our advice to you. We can only advise our hypothetical opinions based on exactly what you tell us and based on what you said, it was never - Friend vs $20K until the end of the story. That's why so many, such as myself began to look behind the words as the situation began to unfold. I'm glad the OP did what he felt was right for him but he should also think twice about throwing out the "My friends are worth more than $20K" rhetoric as if to say that his heart is a bit purer than the next.

Perhaps had he posted... "I was offered...and I decided against it because..." post, we would have not been so polarized on the advise, although theres nothing actually wrong with diversity.
