Mine definitely does NOT automatically apply the EPB when I shut the car down or when I put it in P.
When I drive into my perfectly level garage and stop I simply shut 'er down by hitting the start button and it automatically goes into P, the EPB does not come on and I don't bother to apply the EPB.
Even on the rare occasion I manually put it in P by using the P button the EPB does not come on.
OK...This must be a difference between the ‘16 ATs and MTs.

My indicator lights up (along with the EPB sound) as soon as I push the engine stop button.
Now you got me checking. I came back to the car this morning and the parking brake light is not lit. My guess is that since yours is a MT, they put in the fail-safe in case you were to leave it out of gear. With the Auto, it puts the car into Park when you turn it off.

That does indeed make sense.

Side note. My Saabs had to be in reverse or you couldn't get the key out.

Is there any way to disable the automatic engagement of the ebrake on the manual transmission cars? My habit in nearly 40 years of driving is to just leave the car in first gear, unless it's on a crazy Lombard Street inclination. Never had a car roll out of first gear.

I’ve always been in the habit of leaving the MT in gear AND applying the parking brake, so this particular automatic feature doesn’t bother me even though I find myself manually applying the EPB again anyway after I shut off the engine. A half century of habit is hard to overcome.

We are all set in our ways. Driving a manual at all in this age is evidence of that.
