Who brought the v8 just because of the sound?
All three of us only have our perceptions to go on, of course, although richv8s has active support from JLR for his situation (I haven't raised anything with my dealer - as yet). I've never filmed or recorded my car, nor measured noise outputs or power levels!
So far only early V8S's are affected, perceptibly that is. R and V6 owners haven't reported anything, have they? Looks as though they have nothing to be concerned about (and they're also the vast majority of owners/forum members).
My 2015 V8S has been sitting this one out thus far due to being stored. I will be sure to record the car before I go to the dealership and then again afterwards.
I have already been in touch with the head of the service department. He assures me that he has done the O2 sensor change as well as the software upgrade on a few V8S cars without complaint. I asked whether I had to have this done and he answered that I did for warranty and emission reasons.
Part of me wants to just take it to an independent shop and have it serviced minus the software update or the O2 sensor update. The warranty is only good for another 2 years anyway.... Then there is the emissions issue. I wonder if my car would fail the emission standards in Ontario?

No way no hell is the O2 sensor and software part of your warranty. How in the world could that cause a failure that would have to be covered by warranty. Passing emissions depends on how they are done in your part of the world. In my state they only hook up through the OBD2 port. No measuring of the actual emissions at the pipe. So they are only looking for O2 sensor faults in the ECU.
Have you done emissions yet? Have you passed them yet on this car? If so, whyw ould you change anything.
I am on my third "modern" Jag. I never ever had a software update applied on any of them during routine maintenance. I either had an issue/failure and they dug around for a solutions and came back with a software update, mainly because of TPMS and airbag warning issues or I actually asked for it and had them apply it. I will continue to have my car serviced at my local dealer and I will have them not apply this software upgrade.
Also the notion that it will be part of a future upgrade and cannot be avoided is nonsense, this is not Windows with weekly patches. As I mentioned in the past 4-5 years Jaguar has not applied any software upgrades because they were recommended on any of my cars, only after it was listed as a solution to an actual failure I experienced. Why in the world would one change the O2 sensor if it is not showing a failure? Is this Jaguars Dieselgate?

I have not had the car tested for emissions yet. In Ontario a new car does not need to be tested for 5 years. In another 3 years it will need testing.
I have a couple of weeks to decide what to do. Mine is a 2015. The cars effected seem to be 2013s from UK/Australia....

Sorry if the info is buried somewhere in this thread but do we have VIN sequence numbers for the 3 affected cars? Starting a bit of a database with a VIN correlation may help some people....

Latest news from JLR if I want it with sound and power they won't cover the oxygen sensors on warranty.
And as far as they are concerned that it isn't a fault even though I have it in writing saying it is really not happy.
As far as they are concerned mine is the only one with the problem world wide.
So anybody with the fault your dealers haven't reported it to jaguar.

Dropped mine off for service this morning. The guy told me that there was an oxygen sensor recall (s/w flash). I asked if I had to have it since there may be some correlation between the flash and loss of the beautiful tailpipe music). He'd never heard of that issue, but said that I didn't have to get it done.

What dealer do you use? I'm in PA too
That really sucks. I'm going to take my car out of storage in about 2 weeks and have it services. Mine's a '15 V8S.... I am of 2 minds about taking it to the dealer vs. just going to an independent....
I am convinced that nothing went wrong with the software upgrade, and that the car is working as designed. It's just that the design (software) changed at some point between the very early cars and later examples.
Reason I say this - my car still has plenty of pops bangs and burbles around town between lights driving at normal sedate speeds. It's just that I need to be in standard / sport now. The car has no overrun effects around town in sport / dynamic after the flash (it most definitely did before).
However... Sport / dynamic DOES have overrun pops and bangs. Only when driving in a spirited / very enthusiastic fashion though - when driving like this it's popping and crackling away. This is a change in behavior post flash.
Which is why I say the software design has changed - it still pops and crackles in all modes - it's just the behavior has changed as to when it does so and in which mode.
Do you currently have pops and crackles in dynamic / sport when driving around town at normal sedate speeds? If so, your car behavior might change.

I'm having my MY16 R serviced next week, and am obviously a bit anxious, so I put a letter together to Jaguar Customer Relations in the UK to see if they would allow my dealer the option of not doing it.
Dear Jaguar CRC,
I would like to know if it would at all be possible to NOT have SA – K309 done as part of my first service on my F-Type R VIN #xxxxx, REG # xxxxxx?
Reason I ask; There have been several documented/reported issues back from customers with F-Types that the O2 sensor recall/SA K309, has a detrimental affect on the acoustics/sound of the exhaust, i.e muting it.
I am sure that you may have not heard about this as yet, however several cars are back at retailers having length remedial works being undertaken to try to fix. (however, once the new software is flashed, I don’t believe there is an advised procedure for ‘undoing’ or ‘backtracking’ to an earlier version, although I may be wrong here).
As the sound is one of the key factors in choosing this product, I obviously do not wish for it to be changed, and as such am happy to pay for any warranty work that should arise further down the line with the O2 sensors (which are cheap anyway).
Alternatively, if this does have to be done, what assurances can I have from JLR that NO affect to the exhaust sound will come about as part of this K309 SA?
As an aside I have spoken with my chosen service dealer (Matford Jaguar Exeter) and they have advised me, rightly, that they are not allowed to service the car without this SA being undertaken, that said however, this could be left out if they have confirmation for your good selves.
I look forward to your reply and any technical explanation would be most welcome.
Regards,
Posted end of last week, so I'm hoping for something official back form JLR, and of course will post any feedback for fellow members.

The thread seems to have gone a little quiet, would like to hear if RichV8 has any other news?
In the meantime, here is a reply for Jag CR:
Dear Mr Xxxxxx,
Thank you for your email.
The Service Action is designed to ensure the optimum operation of the oxygen sensors and therefore, the vehicle as a whole and we would recommend it is carried out.
Even so, given the subjective nature of the issue, I could not guarantee that you would not discern a difference if the work went ahead. Neither could I guarantee that the software update may not be applied under different circumstances, or at a different retailer.
As the owner of the car, you are entirely free to decline to have any work done that you may choose.
However, should you decline to have Service Action K309 carried out, I would appreciate it if you could supply xxxxxx with written confirmation that you are happy to take responsibility for any work arising and directly related to, not having the work completed.
I have spoken to xxxxx xxxxxxx there and he would be happy to hear from you should you wish to discuss the matter in more detail.
In the meantime, thank you for taking the trouble to contact us and please do not hesitate to let me know if I can help further.
Yours sincerely
Xxxxx Xxxxxxxxx
So there you have it; it may make a difference, then again, it may not!
