Assuming Car and Driver used the same methods to determine a weight for the different models (below), I surprised that the F-Type isn't shown as being significantly lighter (200-300 lbs) than its bigger brother. I suppose we'll have to see where the weight of the F-Type Coupe comes in to make a real comparison.

2014 F-Type V8 S Convertible: 3974 lbs
=================================
2010 XKR Coupe: 4085 lbs
2007 XKR Coupe: 3870 lbs
2014 XJR L Supercharged Sedan: 4365 lbs

2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Z51: 3444 lbs

Car and Driver has an article about the new Z06 curb weight

Heavy Hitter: 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Curb Weight Leaked

"From that document we’ve learned that the Corvette Z06 coupe will weigh 3524 pounds"

This is interesting, because the F-Type Coupe R is suppose to have a curb weight of 3671. If these curb weights are accurate (using the same methodology) it puts things into perspective. Maybe the F-Type isn't that heavy afterall...

The official weight shows the convertible to be not that much heavier than the equivalent coupe, around 50lbs or so per variant, but chances are that both current versions of our cars are - as is usual in the industry -heavier than the manufacturers published weights.

They're so heavy because they have so much equipment in them that has no bearing on what they're like to drive. Remove all the electric motors and systems that have more relevance to a limo than what's supposedly a sports car, and the weight will drop by several hundred pounds.

The F is a hybrid GT/sports car. It needs to be both. Take away the stuff you mention and you get a Lotus Elise - which is fun every now and then, and I have extended drive time in them my self, but aimed at a different market than the F.

People dropping 100K and more on a car tend to like the motors and systems. It's all well and good to say what Jaguar should do, but if they followed the advice to build a lightweight stripper the chances are that no-one would actually pony up the cash and buy one. It's just like the old manual transmission saga. We can all say how much we'd like one and think that the F needs one, but if Jaguar offered the option chances are the take up rate would be somewhat negligible.

There are light sports cars out there, but they're not playing in the F segment. The F is competitive with the cars it is designed to compete against. It's not trying to be an Elise or even an Exige - and nor should it. It's all the better for it.

Well, at least its lighter than 4000 lbs, still lighter than a GTR.. Who really needs all wheel drive anyway, traction is soo over rated!

Competing directly with Porsche or Lotus on sport performance would be suicidal for Jaguar. The balance between luxury/comfort and sports performance is what makes the F-Type a Jaguar foremost, and a commercial success as a result.

In this respect, the F-Type is closer to Aston Martin or Maserati than Lotus or Porsche.

If you like the toys, you have to accept it's going to weigh more than you'd think.

Although if it were a physically smaller car, it might then be more in line with people's expectations weight wise.

Porsche seem to do well on the physically smaller approach, but they also manage to find buyers who pay significantly more for a lot less in the way of non-driving related gizmos on the basis that it's a special edition.

For those of us who've bought the car, it's entirely within our expectations. We all drove it, we all bought it, we all wrote the check. And I'm sure most of us are more than happy that it has the equipment it has and that it doesn't have an interior that looks like a high school metalwork project

Ive told my daughters, most men prefer women with curves and "alittle" extra weight in the right places does way more for most than a tooth pic
