Default 99 XJ8 scan tool

Ok, I've read numerous our sabot the mongoose, Ids , JLR and the J2534. I'm ow more confused than when I started! It seems as though my 99 slipped through the cracks and most versions don't cover it, only the mongoose mentions it but then goes on to say it only covers jaguar 2005 and up. Ifsomeone could give me input on which one to use, I would like a unit I can program any parts I have to install and run most tests my service Manual might put me thru. also if anyone knows what is so weird about my key that the XJ6 and XJ12 have a different one, just wondering!
Thanks

You're right to be questioning which scan tool to use. Several which are marketed as being suitable for Jaguar turn out not to work. Check this link for code readers and scan tools members have tried:

There's a big difference in cost between a code reader which will read codes /clear the MIL (Check Engine Light) and a scan tool which can interface with all modules and onboard systems.
