Input on reliability and
So I have been a long time Jaguar owner, had my 2001 S-type 4.0 for over 10 years and have learned soooooo much about fixing your own car due to resources being limited. I am proud to say that my S-type is currently at 260,000 miles, and besides some steering issues that have been a bit more costly in the past it is still running strong for having the mileage it has.
Recently I have come across 2 deals that I just can't make a decision on even after reviewing both options.
Option #1:
- 2008 Jaguar XK with 37,000 miles on it for around $17,000 in immaculate (and I really do mean immaculate) condition. No creases on the leather seats, no chips in the paint, nothing.
Option #2:
- 2016/2017 XJL Prestige in nearly immaculate condition with about 56,000 miles on it for around the same price.
My concerns are the following....
- with the S-type at times I have been afraid to drive it , not because it was dangerous but because I had just spent hours fixing it and my back was hurting, hands were shaking and I just didn't want to drive into the next issue haha. Now, I understand that Jags are Jags but between my 2 options above... what's a more reliable and less prone to issue vehicle between the XK and the XJL ? What is easier to diagnose and fix (I do love working on my car), but yet still provides a somewhat reliable method of traveling without having to worry that something is gonna go wrong with my car soon
(within reason) . What's gonna ease my head pain and make me happy with the car I chose, I think both are incredibly beautiful cars but user input is always best.
I thank you all for your input !

If you ask me, I would say to go with the XJL. I Think you are going to like the ride of it a lot more. Now, if you are after sporty, then the XK all the way. Yes, the XJL has a known issue with the coolant system just failing at a moments notice. But, the aftermarket world has stepped up and for about $400 and a few hours of work, you can make the engine almost bullet proof. Sure, there are a few other minor issues, but those are few and far between. The other problem that a lot of people seem to have is the radio. For the car, yeah, it should be better. But, by 2016, most of the issues are pretty well handled and other than the slow response, it does the job.
This thread is now a week old ...But FWIW,
I agree with Chris.
Furthermore, as a dedicated XK fan, I believe that the XK/R is a car for folks who enjoy working on them as much as driving.

I would always suggest the newer model too.
But the XK and the XJ are very different cars and almost at the opposite ends of the car spectrum?
Would you be happy with a large 4 door luxury car compared to a 2 door sport coupe?
But good job on the S-Type and I had a 2005 STR for about 100K miles or so and am still a fan!
You hit the major factor with your comments on repairing your old S-Type. If your willing to DIY the repairs and maintenance you will be fine. Your on this forum which is chock full of repair information too.
