You can grab a GQ4x and testclip for around 110 USD if you want to DIY. It's pretty obvious if it works, as the 4.2 ecu will contain your vin and other details after.

Where do I get such things? And could you talk me through it all?

I have a windows co laptop I could use.

Ebay. Search for an SOIC-8 testclip (pomona) and a gq4x.
