Are 98 & 02 timing chains interchagable?
I have a good 2002 AJ27 short block & a set of 1998 heads. If I put the heads on can I use the newer 2002 style chains & gears. If so when I put the engine in my 1998 XJ8 can I use the new style vvt solenoids & will they work when wired into the 98 engine harness. Any help...Thanks.

I can see a few issues...
The chains on the AJ27 from Aug 13th 2001 are different morse style. If the short block is equipped with crank cogs that match this revised system, the answer would be to convert the inlet drive cog/sprockets, and primary chains along with tensioners and slippers.
The VVT are different on the 27 also, coming out of the top of the cam covers instead of the front timing cover, so you'll have to locate those parts and compare connectors.
The final thing to consider is the starter ring gear, it's different on the 27 so you'd be advised to use the 26 version or it won't start as the cps will not see the correct timing slots.
Hope this helps
