Hi, looking for some advice please.
I have just bought a 98 XJR with a badly damaged engine, looks like bottom end oil starvation leading to bearing and crank failure, top end and ancillaries all look fine. I have a 98 XK engine in very good condition which I was going to try and put into a scimitar coupe (but that's another story), both are 4.0 litre engines but obviously the XJR is supercharged.
I would like to know what I would have to change on the XK normally aspirated engine (AJ26) to turn it into an XJR engine (AJ26) and therefore rebuild the XJR, the XK engine is in considerably better condition overall and I would like to use it as much as possible. Obviously the supercharger and associated bits would have to go on. I have picked up from research that the block and crank are the same (no strengthening for the supercharged version?), the heads are similar (same?) with the exception of removing the VVT from the XK (what do I need to do, operating solenoid on the front, advance mechanism on the camshaft, oil galleries in the head? do I have to remove it?). I would like to know if the camshafts are he same, I expect to change the pistons but what about the con rods? Anything else??????
I have also read that fitting a later model AJ27 oil pump is a good idea, is this difficult given it will be partially stripped down anyway?
I plan to change the crank and con rod shells whilst it is apart and probably the rings.
Grateful for any advice please, especially knowledgeable, I am hoping that this is going to be relatively simple and I will end up with a good XJR for not a lot of money.
Steve.
