69 xke stall problem
I recently took my 1969 XKE in to a Jag repair shop because it would shut off as soon as it turned over. I had previously rebuilt one of the carbs because fuel was leaking from one of them. The mechanic replaced the ignition switch (which he said was registering zero), the condenser (which he said was giving a poor spark) and the fuel pump (which he said was shorted out because of rust in the fuel tank). The car starts great, but shuts down after five or six minutes of driving and, then, I cannot get it to start and keep running. However, if I let it idle until the engine get hot, I can drive it without a problem. The mechanic said that I have the problem because of the rust in the fuel tank which will cost $1,000 to clean out and resurface the tank. I suggested that it may not be the rust because the fuel filter is not being plugged by the rust. The mechanic said that the filter is not designed to filter out the rust. What, in particular, I do not understand is that prior to rebuilding the carb (whcih was very necessary) I did not have a problem with the engine and for three engine components to be bad[:@]?!?!? ANY comments and or suggestions will be greatly appreciated! fjp800@gmail.com

RE: 69 xke stall problem
I would suspect it's something with tuning the carbs or the choke. I believe that model had 3 (maybe only 2) carbs. There is really an art to tuning these puppies and it can make all the difference in the world. I don't buy the rust arguement. Rust doesn't go away when the engine gets hot. The only thing that is really affected by heat in that model is the fuel mixture. See if you can find some old mechanic that still has the feel for them. It's half art, half science, and a whole lot of voodoo.
