so how do I stop getting bombarded at midnight with emailed copies of every thread I have been in?

Here you are

1- Click on the UserCP
2- You will see a new page open and scroll down see the Subs Menu right under the Private Message Menu (Capture 1 ) just click on the red marked area to see the subs threads / messages
3- Capture 2 , you will see all the messages / threads subs as list
4- Capture 3 , see the Selected Threads option and choose no email notification , make sure you check the threads as above
