Default Useless website

This website is absolutely useless because it is impossible to ask a simple question. Every time I come to the website I spend ages trying to find out how I can ask a question and most of the time I never succeed and just close down in frustration. I have been a member for a couple of years and, so far, I have succeeded in getting one question answered, unsatisfactorily.

Why can't you have a simple tab which says "Ask you question"

If I can find out how to do it, I am going to remove myself from the website and find somewhere which is more user friendly.

Lol. The website is far from useless. Just start a new thread and ask your question. Pretty simple.

Simply click on the forum you want to ask a question in then click on the new thread button in the top left corner and start typing.

It is really not that difficult and you seem to have achieved it in typing your statement.

I've only been a member of this forum for one week, which is the same amount of time I've owned my Jag. In that time, I found a plethora of information and a simple fix, which saved me a trip to the dealer. I also viewed this forum as a guest before I bought the car. There was a ton of information on what to look for when buying a Jag.

Useless? Far from it...

Out of curiosity, I looked up previous posts you initiated

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-system-52183/

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...ertible-68158/

and others you participated in:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...eset-ecu-4258/

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...ng-help-54970/

Looks like in all cases you got lots of prompt, friendly and informative advice. (?)

I wish all car-oriented websites were this good.

John, I've moved your post to the feedback section, I tend to agree with Mikey but it does seem you were having problems some time ago, perhaps you could outline the specific issues you are experiencing?

If I'm honest operator error springs to mind.

(The little smiley guy means I'm pulling your leg)

Give us some detail and we'll try and help.

Saw the thread title and was curious, had to check it out, so at least a well named thread as a starter!

We are by no means a perfect forum, but do try our best to post good information and be generally helpful and friendly.

I'm glad to say we are usually on the receiving end of positive remarks that show gratitude and appreciation for the site, not negatives, as stated by some members / mods previously.

I don't mean to offend but tend to agree that it may be operator error, not taking the time to familiarise yourself with the workings of the site, which personally I think is pretty straightforward.

If there's anything we can help with moving forward, you simply have to reply here and if we can help, we will be glad to.

Thanks

Since the subject has come up......

I've belonged to umpteen car forums past and present. This is one of the best.

Lots of members with *plenty* of good info and advice, absolute minimal acrimony/disharmony, idle chit-chat kept in the right section where it belongs, easy to use format....and, oh yeah, nice admins who stay on top of things

I could probably find *something* to complain about but , if you have to struggle to find a complaint, you're just being petty.

My hat's off to everyone, admins and fellow members alike.

Cheers

LOL Doug, the latest proposed upgrade is 'teleconferencing' in this way you will be able to respond to any questions about anything in real time through a video link without even having to navigate to the appropriate forum section or checking to see if the information already exists.

After much discussion we have decided to call this 'feature'.

ASK DOUG

I'm sorry to hear that you find the forum so inadequate. The thread you started in XK8/XKR section in February 2012 and your reaction to the replies it received gave no hint of this frustration.

Fortunately I have been able to locate a specialist in English Harbour, Antigua who will be able to answer any and all questions you may have regarding your XK8:

My personal experience with Jaguar Dealers in many parts of Europe is that they are extremely user friendly and I have no reason to think Premier Motors would prove to be an exception.

I don't care what anyone says. The site might be very helpful once you can get to ask your question. I have just spent five minutes trying, again, to find how I can ask a question and, again, I cannot set up a new thread. THERE IS NOTHING ON THE SITE WHICH SAYS - 'START A NEW THREAD'. Why can't have a simple tab which says - 'ASK YOUR QUESTION' which is, in effect, what a lot of other sites say.

I object to being called and 'idiot' or to the suggestion that it is operator error. The site is not intuitive. I am not being stupid. I first installed computers in my office in 1985 and used to write my own programmes in RM Cobol on CPM86 machines. I have also designed and built about a dozen websites and written accounting packages for MSDOS. I currently have 3 computers on my desk, 2 Macs and a PC plus another Mac and a PC on my side table, We have another 2 Macs and another PC just for two of us. I am conversant in at least 20 current computer programmes which I use on a daily basis.

Most of the time I attempt to use Jaguar forums I give up in FRUSTRATION!!!!. It's not me, it's the site.

Just out of interest, my Jaguar history starts in 1972 with a 420, XJ6, XJ12 and an XJ 4.2 Coupe, all used. Followed by, new, 5 XJS V12 Coupes, a 4.0 Coupe and a 4.0 Convertible. Then 2 XK8 Convertibles. I also had an XK150 3.8s DHC (genuine with matching numbers confirmed by Jaguar). In 2005 I semi-retired to the Caribbean island of Antigua where I bought a couple of 4 x 4s but in 2010 decided to buy a used XK8 Convertible which has been rather troublesome and, with no dealer in Antigua, I have been attempting to maintain myself with the help of the local Land Rover dealer.

Your site would be useful if only it was more user friendly and allowed members to simply ask a question.

Thank you Graham. I know Gilly of Premier Motors, English Harbour extremely well. My wife does his accounts. I knew him long before we moved to Antigua from my yacht racing days in the U.K.. Gilly (Premier Motors) is Land Rover qualified but not a Jaguar agent. I was in his garage yesterday (he is currently in the U.K.) with his mechanic attempting to top up my gearbox fluid. My drive is very steep uphill (going out) and when the gearbox is cold it is slipping out of gear. Awaiting some parts, we decided to top up the oil but, contrary to everything I read on the internet and the mechanics experience with ZF gearboxes on Land Rovers, rather than trickle out when the engine is running, the transmission fluid shot out of the fill hole under high pressure and the mechanic could not top up the fluid. I now have less fluid in the gearbox than previously and I was seeking a solution, hence my visit to this site. I was only able to start this thread because I was able to get in via a 'new members' thread.

John,

I've copied your post #13 to a new thread in XK8/XKR section. Here's the link:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...roblems-99257/

Let's see if we can get some helpful answers.

What am I missing? If you can start this thread, you can ask questions! And, apparently, you've done this before -- I'm beginning to smell a rat! LOL

With the greatest of respect John it is easy if you listen.

Open up any forum page you like, underneath the title box you will see a box entitled New Thread, click on it and post your question.

It really is that easy.

I also re-read all the previous posts and nowhere did anyone refer to you as an "idiot"
.
If you have some ideas on how you think the forum could be improved for the better of all, then a well written, constructive post to the Mods may help, especially in the light of your computer programming knowledge.

It would seem that only by 'losing my rag' have I been able to find how to set up a new thread. I have attempted to contact the 'moderator' on several occasion to ask how to set up a new thread but never had a reply.

As they say, it's easy once you know how. But, if you don't it can be impossible to find and extremely frustrating particularly if the site is not intuitive. Every time I have entered the site successfully it has been ten or fifteen minutes of searching around and getting in 'by accident'. I still maintain that the Home pace should have a simple tab saying Ask Your Question. It can have sub-menus directing the question to the area of the site which deals with the particular model.

Thank you to those, particularly Norri, who clarified something which has frustrated me for several years and thank you to GGG for the link - the reason I came to the site in the first place.

It now dawns on me that perhaps part of the problem is that this is intended as a Jaguar *discussion forum* and not as an "Ask a Question" web page.

It so happens that thousands of questions get asked (and answered) but it isn't intended simply as a "Q&A" page where there's a text box titled "Type your question here".

So, yes, if that's what you're expecting, I can see where you'd be a bit flummoxed.

Here you have to 1) select a category appropriate for the discussion you wish to have or question you'd like to ask and then 2) start a "new thread".

Cheers
