Interesting article. I agree that a more upscale line such as Aston Martin would be a good choice. The companies were once siblings under Ford. The purchase would add cachet to JLR and they could provide a line of SUVs and CUVs to Aston to expand their line up.

Purchasing a general brand such as Mazda, again a former Ford stepchild, could give then access to expanding engineering and research resources. However this could drag JLR down in prestige if they collaborated on engines for example. Maybe they want to chase MBZ into the mass market, probably not a good idea.
