yes i thought it unusual that it would start in gear but thought it was due to the car being more antiquated than my xj's and therefore not equipped with such safety devices. there appears to be a silver relay bypassed to the left of glovebox which contains ignition wires could this be the culprit?

 

Its a silver circular thing under the steering column, has 4 or 5 wires going into the top of it ( or it should if it hasnt beeen by passed)

well the repair of series 3 took up some time as it was the elephant in the room/ garage so the 420 g took a back seat for a while, however it has been cleaned primed painted and waxoyled underneath, wheels refurbished and new back boxes fitted and let back on her wheels. no rot to report on the underside thanks to old waxoyl.

next up is spruce up the wood, interior trim and engine bay/ door jambs, nothing too labour intensive i just hope to have these jobs out of the way ready for a quick respray in new year ready for show season 2012.

 

Sprucing up the wood, it ost probably takes longer to remove it than it does to restore and refit but well worth doing...

On the topic of show season 2012 do you get many mk10 /420g in Ireland ?

 

yes it was quite a task thanks to the use of tiny flat head screws used in assembly! very satisfying job though.

i have seen only one other mk10/ 420g at shows here, but there are a few, (as in 4), cropping up for sale of late presumably due to collectors falling on hard times and trying to raise some cash.

i have however never seen an original irish registered one ever and i dont believe any others exist. so that would give mine some bragging rights!! i would be delighted to be proven wrong though.........

I have been busy folks the big jag is all but finished but i cant seem to attach pics as i am using a tablet and there is no facility to do such a task, if anyone can offer advice i would be delighted to share my progress, but i digress, i have a more pressing query. Has anyone a pic of the boot/ trunk badges in situ on a 420g. Im trying to fit a "g" below the 420 badge that was made from a spare jaGuar badge and i want to make sure im right before i fit it. I can only find aftermarket G badges on line and they are incorrect. Cheers jj.

Not really, you see there is a generic aftermarket G on that one in a different script to the original. The original is basically the same as the g in the jaguar script and actually looks more like a c. I know where it should be placed due to the mounting hole being present but i am not sure whether the chrome bar or underline should be removed from the G or left as it is on the jaguar and 420 badges? You are right though there are few pics of the back of them. Thanks for the reply.

I know im being a bit of an anorak here but im almost 100% certain those are all aftermarket because they are a different script and seem far too big compared to the jaguar and 420 badges. And i saw one of these large ones on a restored 420g last year, the owner told me he got the g on ebay as he could not locate an original. It just looked wrong. Ill have another root about my old jag books and see if i have any joy there. Does anyone else reckon the pictured ones look incorrect? Or is it just me?

 

Ok i found a pic in an old British Leyland publicity brochure and yes the original badge is a small underlined g the same as in the jaguar script, it actually looks like a c. They were very poorly mounted with just one fixing hole so that may explain the reason why they are all missing or replaced?

Also any suggestions about attaching pics via tablet as i have lots to share.

 

Finally figured how to post pics.... here is some pics of how she is at the moment and one of how she was when found. Its the correct colour even though it looks very faded in before pic. Have plenty more pics if ye want?

Pics in primer and guide coat, ten litres in all! Made top coat go on smooth though. Interior is taking ages to refit, i was warned it was a mammoth task and it is. Nearly there.
