Default Mk VII Gear lever gaiter installation

Dear All,
Work is progressing on the Mk VII with the upholstery almost complete and the windscreens now fitted.

One of my current problems is that I am unable to find any information on any Jag forum or the internet re how the rubber gear lever gaiter (BD14134) is fitted.

Providing a new gaiter to the upholsterer has resulted in this....

The top view is less than glamorous but the bottom view is downright worrying as the carpet and underfelt is clearly visible and, thus, exposed to water/dirt/etc. ingress.

The bottom photo shows a square/rectangular hole with weld nuts around the perimeter.

I believe there is a part that should be fitted here that the gaiter is then fitted into.

The best I have been able to find on the internet are images showing the top of the gear lever showing a leather gaiter but I have no details of this either.

Can anyone help with photos/pictures/parts catalogue data?

Any and all help appreciated.

BTW, here is a photo of the old girl just after the front windscreens were fitted. It looks a treat.

Regards,

Tony

Tony,

I've also searched but cannot find a photo of the gear lever gaiter.

I can never forget being in my grandfather's new Mark VII in 1955 but I was only six years old at the time and the smell of leather, gleam of wood and chrome are the abiding memories from that time.

From later sightings of Mark VII's, I'm sure there should be a leather gaiter retained by a chrome ring screwed to the tunnel covering the rubber gaiter you have fitted. The top end of this leather gaiter fitting neatly round the gear lever with a chrome ferrule.

If I'm right, there should be a closing plate on top of the tunnel to reduce the size of that square cutout.

Hi Graham,
Great memories and you are correct in that there is a leather gaiter.

I'm sure back then the Mk VII was a very stylish and dignified car. It still is today!

I've since found out that there was never a rubber gaiter fitted, just the lkeather one.

As an automotive engineer I find it hard to believe that Sir William Lyons would have permitted this due to road noise/detritus entry.

That said, I intend to discretely fit one under the correct leather gaiter.

Thank you for your reply.

Best regards,

Tony
