Finally the car is purring like a kitten. Apparently this is unusual but my SU idle speed adjustment isn't a bleed screw - it works on the butterfly levers.
Plus, short of taking each linkage off, the carburetors can't be de-coupled. The only possible way that I could figure out the balancing, was to back off idle screws (completely) which work on the butterfly arms and laboriously adjust each linkage. Adjusting length shorter or longer, time and time again, engine off each time, adjust, start, listen - until balanced. Then set idle screws down to make sure nothing shifts. . I have an unusual linkage - it looks early e-type to me. Can hardly find any images on Internet that are similar either. Maybe I missed the obvious, but it's finally done!!!!
Also, I found the 2.5 turns down of each mixture screw didn't work well so set the jets down 0.070" as suggested here (thx!!!) Using verniers.
Cherish the moment Michael...the process of sorting a machine is full of those "little victories" that erase the frustration of dealing with stuff we've never dealt with before.
