Default Fogranger headlamps controlled by??

Hi Folks,
Going through some butchered wiring on '68 Mk2 RHD, what switch controls the lower foglamps? Should they come on with the main headlights or ??
Thanks,
Seann

the master lighting switch has a "Fog" lights position, (number 4), which turns on the fog rangers. If your car does not have the 4-position switch, it did not have fog lamps originally, most MK-2 and S type shipped to USA did not come with fog lamps.

the way Jaguar designed it, perhaps logically, the headlights go OFF when the switch is moved to the "Fogs" position, because during fog conditions, the headlamps light will only reflect back on you, an unsafe condition.

However, it is nice to use all four lamps during normal weather conditions, so in my S type, I wired them with separate wiring/relay/and switch.

My car was shipped here from England in the '80's (RHD), has 2 position switch. I'll probably run the first position for the fogs and second for both, no daytime running/parking lights on the front of this, thanks.

strange that a UK car would not have the 4 position switch, (position 1 being "ALL OFF" which I assume is the reason you say your car has a 2 position switch).

the idea to power the fogs with the Parking lights (Position 2) is a good one.

When I rebuilt a Mark 2 2.4 litre in the 80s, the car didn't have the Fograngers, just the little false grills. The lighting switch had the three positions, plus the escutcheon around it with the three position names on it, (Off, Side, Head). The guy who owned the garage where I had the car worked for Lucas and told me the switch did have the 4th position, but it was blocked off. So we dismantled the switch, unblocked the 4th position and I bought an escutcheon with the "Fog" position on it.

That's interesting about the switch.
I know my 340 has the wiring on the loom for the fog lamps, but of course it's not being used.

I can confirm that the switch in the UK market is blocked off if the car was delivered without the fog lights. I think this persisted into the XJ range! I bought a new switch before I discovered this!!!

would be nice if you documented the switch "unblocking" procedure with pictures so that the rest of us learn how to do it.

Yes, this blocking persisted through the Series 3 XJ body style (made until 1992). Although in the Series 3 XJ all you have to do is remove a "C" clip to allow the fog lamps position to activate.

AFAIK, the switch is secured closed by crimping, so one has to "uncrimp" the crimps, then the back of the switch can be removed.
