Default Mark 1 full spats

There may be something wrong with me, but I really like the full spats seen on some MK1s. Does anyone know whether these would fit on a MK2? I suspect they might fit the bodywork, but might not have clearance for wire wheels with spinners. After all, the MK1 axle is narrower than the MK2's, perhaps for the purpose of getting the wheels to fit inside the spats. But with steel wheels, perhaps moved inward a bit increasing offset, it might work. Anyone have any insight on this subject?

On my mk1 I am running mk2 rims wich are 1/2 inch wider than original mk1 rims. Tyres are 185 Wredesteins and there is not more than 15mm clearance to the rear lower part of the spats. I believe you need to offset your rear rims to get the necessary space. I think the axle is 50mm shorter on each side on mk1 vs mk2. If I did not have wires on my mk2 I could verify the fit for you as I have a full spat mk1 standing next to my mk2. I definitely agree that there is something about the full spats on the mk1

and I would never replace them with anything like mk2 or Coombs style.

Sventek, Thanks for that information. Unfortunately, it seems to indicate that the MK1 spats cannot be fitted to a MK2 without narrowing the axle. My reasoning is as follows: using the MK2 stock steel wheel, you have 15mm clearance to the spat using the 185-series Vredestein. The stock MK2 wheel is 5" wide with the hub offset 4" from the inside rim. That means that the outer edge of the axle mounting flange is 70mm inside the spat. If the MK2 axle is 50mm longer on each side, that places the outer edge of the axle mounting flange only 20 mm inside the spat. The 185mm Vredestein tire protrudes 29mm beyond the 5" (127mm) wheel rim. That makes the installation impossible.

If you see something wrong with this analysis, please let me know.
