Remove Overdrive S Type
Anyone have experience removing the overdrive with the transmission still in the car from an S Type? I need to replace the gasket between the overdrive and transmission and do not want to pull the engine and trans to fix the leak.
I, too, have this problem, with my S Type gearbox needing topping up with oil between services and an overdrive getting very reluctant to engage correctly. I have scoured the books and internet for information on removing the gesrbox on its own but everything says the whole lump needs taking out.
However, I had an S type back in about 1970, when I was a much younger lout, and I'm pretty sure I wangled the gearbox out on its own to replace the clutch because I knew no better. I'd guess I dropped the back of the engine down as low as possible, after probably removing the radiator, so the spigot shaft cleared the clutch enough to come out and got the top bell housing bolts out with great difficulty. It's also likely that I 'forgot' to refit the most awkward bell housing bolts because that's what we did back then. I certainly didn't remove the front suspension and I didn't have the equipment to lift the whole lump out..
I shall try and repeat the exercise and, in the event of no one else having better information, shall keep you up to date with my efforts in the fullness of time.
So much to do and so little time, these days.

I'll back Ray up. I dont have overdrive in that car, but i did take Just the my gearbox out without the bell housing. To qualify my statement, I have the DG250 trans. I did this 3-4 years ago, and i'm no young sprite, but it wasnt bad enough for me to remember any lasting pain. There was a thread about it on the S-type register forum, but that has been broken the last few days. As I recall, I put a jack under the engine with a piece of plywood on it, that way i could adjust if needed. I dont think i did anything on the front of the motor, but I didnt have a fan shroud at the time either. The gearbox is bolted to the bell housing by 4 bolts that can be got at fairly easily with various extensions. Good luck.
