Hi everyone. Im James- first time jag owner. I was told by an acquaintance of mine who is a multiple jag owner that I might want to join a forum to better understand the machine I purchased, beautiful car by the way. In his telling me me this I kinda took from it that these cars have their problems and as all of us owners know, they can get expensive. I read up a bit about some of the mechanical problems from what I could find on line- timing belt tensioner, sulfate gasoline, throttle body problems and so fourth. Some one please telll me that it wont be a horror story owning this vehicle and its worth it- worth more than just being seen driving it around on occasion while the rest of the time its down or in the shop from problems. I got a fair price on it, 115k miles, no hiccups from what I gathered on my twenty mile test drive on country road. Give me some feed back and let me know what you guys think; is it a headache or not?
Hi James, welcome to the forum. You will find a friendly and helpful community here.
Jaguars are generally well built cars and there are members of this forum that have over 200k miles on their cars. They do require care and feeding, however and don't take we'll to neglect and lack of maintenance. They also prefer to be driven regularly and are sensitive to battery voltage.
There is a revised design for the secondary timing chain tensioners and you should check that the update has been done but the other issues you mention are no more likely for the Jag than other cars.
All around they are reliable cars if well taken care of. Enjoy it.

Hi James:
Welcome and greetings from the Midwest Region. When I purchased my first Jag I has some serious "what have I done" panic... You will soon get over it and enjoy the ride. At 115K, I wouldn't be surprised if you end up doing some maintenance; but you'd do that with any car of the same mileage. Well taken care of, these cars can go an incredibly long time. And there's such driving pleasure. Rest easy, my son. You've made a good choice.

Hey thanks guys; I appreciate the words of calm. I've been looking into it and I plan on getting the timing chain tensioner issue examined and taking care of soon. By the way Im from Cincinnati, Ohio so i'm a midwest jag guy too. Until next time. P.S. I'll post pics soon as I can.
Welcome to the forum James,
You've made two good decisions - buying a Jaguar and joining the forum to help you keep it running economically. Check and take care of the known issues then relax and enjoy it.
Follow this link XJ ( X308 ) XJ8 / XJR - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the X308 section for help, advice and information. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top there is a good place to start for info on regular issues. You've already read up on tensioners so check cooling system to get the two big ones out of the way.
Remember to add vehicle details to your Signature to help others to give relevant advice. Go to the User CP button on the left of the top menu bar, then Settings & Options under Your Control Panel. Select Edit Signature and enter the details.
You may also like to visit the US North East Region section by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/north-east-us-me-nh-vt-ma-ri-ct-nj-ny-pa-35/ to find other members in your region.
Enjoy the forum.
