Hello from Eastern Kentucky
Just got home from Atlanta where I purchased a 1999 Jaguar with 29000 miles on it. It's the standard xj8 in BRG. I flew down last Tuesday , met with the seller and after concluding our transaction, drove it 10 miles to my daughter's home to visit my grandchildren. Friday morning , I had planned to return to Ky when , the car wouldn't start. It has a 3 week old battery but nothing. I checked the ground cable and tried a jump. No joy.
Called AAA and after their best effort to start it , towed it to the dealer. The guesses were that I needed a starter and my brake light switch was bad. It turns out that the seller had given me two sets of keys but only one had been programmed. Once that was corrected I made the 500 mile trip home with no problems.
Now I'm trying to decide if I immediately do the secondary cam chain tensioner replace or enjoy it for a few thousand miles first. The milage may not justify it but perhaps the age of the plastic does.
This is my sixth Jaguar and I intend to keep it until my driving days are over. I look forward to using the forum as a valuable resource for years to come. Thanks to all that make this such a great site.

Welcome! I am in western KY (BG) and sorry to hear about the issues you had with the car. I'm not too familiar with the xj8s so I will leave that question to more knowledgeable people.

Welcome to this friendly Forum, John.
I'd vote with Norri re the tensioners.
It's difficult to say if age or mileage count most and you'd probably get away with a few more miles but - if they let go the car will probably be scrap.

Welcome to the forum John,
Let's hope Day 2 of your ownership was the worst it ever gets.
Another vote for an immediate change of tensioners. Too many disaster stories posted on the forum to risk postponing the work.
Enjoy the XJ8 and the forum.
