A little about me, I'm from MD, live and work in VA now as a, you guessed it, Volkswagen technician at a dealer. My father had an 81 XJ6 from the time I was about 2 and it was our primary family car until I was about 13 or 14 and I fell for it in a big way. That led to a life long love of Jags and started me down the road of a car nut. I've always wanted a series III XJ and thought they were the most beautiful sedans on the road. Along the way I got into VWs and all manner of 80s European cars but the Jag has always been my first love. The shop across the street from us has had an 87 XJ6 parked out front for the 2 or so years and I've been trying to get it about as long as it's been there. A couple weeks ago the owner finally relented, realizing he didn't have enough time for it and I bought it for $600. Body and interior are in great shape and with a little leather conditioner and a good buffing/waxing it should look fantastic.

Being a mechanic my mantra for buying old cars (which I'm doing seemingly constantly....just ask my girlfriend) is I don't car about the mechanical problems, just give me a clean body and this one fits the bill perfectly. Floors, rockers, front and rear wings, suspension mounting points and headlight areas are all 100% rust free. The only rust worth speaking of is at the lower driver's side of the windshield and the seam between the end of the spare tire well and the rear valence. Mechanically the diff is a little noisy and leaking, the whole IRS will come down and get rebuilt top to bottom soon enough and a head rebuild due to loose tappet guides on cylinders 1 and 2 exhaust side is in my future. What strikes me most about this car from looking it over is how relatively simple and easy to work on most parts of it seem to be. Outside of the HVAC system everything to keep the car moving seems straight forward enough. Anyways, enough babbling, I'll get to the rest in the technical forums so here's some pictures of the old girl.

Don't ignore the windscreen rusting, it is probably already perforated and letting rain water into the car. This was a fault that was never put right by Jaguar. These "original" XJs were never intended to have glue-in windshields, it was introduced with the Series 3, and the aperture is not the right design for one. On mine I had to take the windscreen out and get some welding done.

Noted and I had no intention of letting it wait. I am 100% sure that no water is yet entering the passenger compartment, though, which is certainly a good thing. As many of these things as I've looked at over the years I was simply amazed at how perfect the floors and rockers are on this one. I intend to keep it that way. It probably will see very little rain, too. Don't get me wrong, it's not just going to sit all year but I have a garage so might as well take advantage. I will likely pull the windscreen this winter along with some other work and get that taken care of.

Thought I'd throw a link up to my thread in the other forum if anyone's curious about the technical/mechanical progress.

Nice car. I like the black and red combo. Looks sweet! Good luck on all the maintenance stuff. Let me know what you do to fix your windshield bubbling.

Take care,

Eric
