New XJ8 Owner Destin Fla
Welcome to the forum Mark. I to, have a 99xj8 and love it. Great lines! Not to scare you, but research secondary timing chain tensioners. Originals were nylon and will fail around 80-100k miles. Replacement can be done with rental of special tools, or, of course. dealer will be more than happy to fix for you. This seems to be the single biggest issue with our model year. Otherwise a great ride, I love mine, dailly driver by my 21 year old, and yet it survives, with the occasional blood sweat & tears on my part.
There's a great deal of information on the xj8 forum. Enjoy your ride.

Thanks for the insight on the tensioners.
What is the easiest way to check if they have been changed? I have no info from prev owners. Bought this with misfire on cyl 3 code. Guy thought motor is junk. His loss my gain.

I am about to tackle changing out the bad coil.
Does anyone know the cyl order for this motor: 99 xj8 4l.
Code shows #3 misfire.
Also what code reader would you recommend?
Thanks for any and all comments.

Mark. Need to move your post over to the xj8/xk8 forum. Having said that. The #3 coil misfire should be the second cylinder back on the passenger side. Here's some additional info:
Bank 1 = A Bank = Passenger Side
Bank 2 = B Bank = Drivers Side
Firing Order: 1-1, 1-2, 4-1, 2-1, 2-2, 3-1, 3-2, 4-2
Misfire Cylinders:
Drivers Side - 2,4,6,8
Passenger Side - 1,3,5,7
Above info from JTIS (Jag Service Pub)
Good luck, easy job. Been there, done that.
There are plenty of posts about code readers, I've got an $85 MAC Tools, Model ET50, works for me, I probably wouldn't be able to operate anything fancier.
Forgot tensioner question....Short of repair history, pulling a valve cover off to have a look is about it.

Hey there Misham, hope you ge to the bottom of your troubles buddy!
In the meantime, If you have anything further to post on this. or any other subject relating to your car, you really need to post it into the relevant section for your vehicle.
This is where the majority of members with your model etc will visit and see you info / problems etc and hopefully respond.
This section is just for newbies to introduce themselves to the site and essentially be welcomed.
Good luck
