Rhode Island wanna be
Hello everyone,
I reside in RI. After years of owning multiple Triumphs (TR6,8, 3A) and the arrival of my first grandchild I have decided to sell my TR3A and buy an XKR convertible or maybe an XK8. (4 seater)
I'd love some insight on model years to "stay away from" - every manufacturer has them. My budget is not huge but I see up to 2003's XKR's for $15,000 or less. I was told to get a car that has service records etc ... but there must be other pointers out there. I'd like to get 2000 or newer.

Welcome to the forum coldpad1,
If you are considering an XK8/XKR because it has rear seats, check the legroom very carefully. No good for adults and even young children soon complain.
Follow this link XK8 / XKR - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the XK8/XKR section for help, advice and information. The 'HOW TO' thread at the top there is a good place to start for info on regular issues. Look especially at tensioners and cooling system which are the two big issues with early models.
You may also like to visit the US North East Region section by following this link https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/north-east-us-me-nh-vt-ma-ri-ct-nj-ny-pa-35/ to find other members in your region.
Enjoy the search and the forum.

Not sure if here is where I should ask this question or start a post somewhere else. While looking at some XK for sale I once saw one advertised (I think it was a 2000) - Not the (excuse spelling) Naislik (or maybe said it was) this particular engine as if to say these engines were problesome. can anyone shed some light as to this staement

The problem engines had Nikasil lined cylinder bores. It was supposed to be harder wearing but was destroyed by the sulphur content in fuel at the time. Jaguar replaced many engines under warranty.
Engines built after August 18, 2000 all had steel linings and don't have this problem. The first engine serial number with steel cylinder linings is 0008181043.
Check under 'Nikasil' in the HOW TO section for more information:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/xk8-xkr-17/xk8-xkr-how-diy-repair-maintenance-links-facts-data-29800/
It's safe to say that if a Nikasil engine hasn't failed by now, it isn't going to.
