I have a Nikon D300s with
Sigma 18-50 f2.8 HSM (my favourite lens)
Nikon 18-200 VR
Nikon SB-900 Speedlight
I'm looking for a good little compact at the moment to take with me when I don't want to lug the D300s around, Canon S95 looks like the favourite.
When the D400 (or whatever it will be called) comes out, I think that is going to be the APS-C camera to beat, but i'm happy with my what I've got for now

Canon Rebel XT-i DSLR
stock 18-55mm lens
Quantaray 70-300mm entry-level zoom f4-5.6
various filters - UV, CPL, 80A (to kill red light tint for night shot, and Cokin blue/yellow polarizer)
for point-and-shoot:
Sanyo S1414
if I need zoom and SLR is too heavy:
Sony DSC-H1
Dream gear ... ? I just want a general purpose lens for the SLR, so I am looking for a 28-300mm, preferably with image stabilization, but that's also fast enough for air show work

Joseph, with those two very good 3rd party lenses, you'll have 90% of any situation covered, and the ability to go to f2.8 on them makes them almost perfect. For you, I recommend trying out one lens that can do f2.0, or a 1.4...the ability to really blur the background can make a good photo - great.
As for the speedlight, I hear great things about the Metz flashes. But, I have also been told by a Nikon expert, that if you want to be able to use the Nikon off-camera flash system, stick with the SB-900s and SB-600s (IIRC those are the right models), you'll never have to worry about compatibilty issues and exposure when using them off-camera down the road.
I started my photography in the Minolta film and digital SLR arena, I had some incredible gear back then... a 7D, a Sony 70-200/2.8, Minolta 28-70/2.8 G, 85/1.4 G, 35/1.4 G, Sony 135 STF, Minolta 400/4.5 G...then with the introduction of Sony's bodies, I didn't like the change in color on their full frame sensors, so made the huge transition to Canon. Selling all of that gear was heartbreaking, but when I did, I went through a few different combinations...settling on this as my final one.
Canon 5d (original)
Zenitar 16/2.8 fisheye
Sigma 50/1.4 and 120-300/2.8
Canon 24-70/2.8, 70-200/2.8 (mk1), and 135/2
Tamron 90/2.8 macro
My only other additional purchase that I'd like to acquire is a 1D Mark III, and swapping my Sigma 50/1.4 for a Canon 35/1.4.

Matt.... i do agree purchasing the Metz is great, but for the price it will be better off with SB900 and there will be no compatibility issue.
as for the lens.. i was looking at the nikon 50 mm F1.8 or the new AF-S 50mm F1.4 prime lens. (the AF-S is more expensive.. might be going for the regular AF 50mm F1.4)
or go crazy with the 85mm F1.4 either Nikon or Sigma lens...
Disco stu55m, Hmm i do think Nikon body are a bit small compared to the Canon.. but i've been using Nikon for as long i remember.. Had my dad F3, then I purchase the N90S, F5, D90 and now the D7000 (should have gone with the D300s instead... ) but none the less D7000 is a great camera....
So what is your gear?

Nikon D700 and D7000. 14-24 f/2.8, 24-70 f/2.8, 28-300, 50, legacy AI glass. I got into photography as a teen and ever since, my cameras' abilities always exceeded my skills as a photographer, much like my XFR's abilities exceed my driving skills! Probably my favorite lens is the 14-24, as I am a super wide freak and fan of existing light. I picked up the D7000 recently as a second body and to shoot the occasional video, as well as give me extended focal length for sports and as a slightly smaller package for vacations or casual shooting.

Anyone using a K-7?
Good thread.
Monopod is a great idea for hiking. I find it handy for shooting from the road too, U know when you jump out to photograph a moose...the car roof is never in the right place.
I take most pics with my iPhone 3GS. It's good enough for the web and I like the pic quality. My camera camera is a Lumix DMC-TZ3 which I bought for the 10x zoom.
I want a Pentax K-7 real bad, with a wide-zoom.

And the k-7 is i think the best compitor with the nikon along with the 60d. I hate how wide angles are so darn expensive and no body seeems to carry the tokina 11-16mm for nikon like wtf man.

Hi.. if interested on purchasing the D7000 might as well go to local Ritz or Wolf Camera... if they don't have it they can look it up in other location nearby or order it for you..
