I’ve owned this car for 20 years and have driven it 130K wonderful miles. The last 80K miles were on a brand new crate engine and rebuilt overdrive transmission. It has been very reliable, I think I only got stranded once with a bad starter. The paint is glossy (base coat / clear coat) and the interior is nice, chrome is excellent including all the wheels and hubcaps. It has XJ40 front seats with electric recline. The headliner is perfect (replaced before I got the car). Floorboards and rockers are all solid – the car has been in the south and garaged for the last 20 years. I drove it to a car show last November – 500 mile round trip with no problems. The tires have good tread, both fuel tanks work. Fresh battery. Hagerty’s insurance for $8000 declared value only costs me $165/year. Georgia antique plates cost me $30/year.
Irritations: A/C system is still closed and compressor will run but it doesn’t pump properly. One of the vacuum motors for the center vent quit working last month. Dent on top of the RH front fender. Puffs a little smoke when I start the car after sitting – should be the typical valve stem seals. I never have to add oil between oil changes (4000 miles or less). LH fuel tank sends rust particles, which I catch in those little glass-tube fuel pre-filters. Stitching threads are broken in the pleats four places on the back seat. About four rust-bubbles in each of the front fenders, just behind the front wheels.
Here’s a you-tube video on our way back from the car show:
