Default 2000 S-type - "no heat"

Well it's my first post andI have a problem. No sweat! Long time Euro Ford lover/owner here with a Jag in the basement that's about 3hours old andI'm already asking for help - First on the list is to fix the heat:

Symptom: Zero heat. Ambient outside temp only.

Conditions: Engine temp is fine. Blower is fine, A/C works fine

Possible causes: Does the S-Typehave heater core actuator doors? Is there a thermistor that's busted? Anyone?

Well the coolant cap unscrews with zero boil over. I ran it for 10 minutes until the fan came on and it didn't boil over. So either there is a monster air bubble in there or the thermostat is hooped.I'm thinking thermostat. Odd that there should be SOME heat with a car that has heat in the block.

The first thing I would do is to contact the people that you bought it from and explain the problem or show them. Maybe they know something about it. They should at least offer to have it looked at. I would do this before I started trying to fix it. Even if the thermostat was stuck open I would think that you would get some heat!

Bought privately. They were clueless hence the good price. I've been around a lot of wrenchs in my day and like you said. SOME heat. If the weather is a bit better, I'll drain the entire system and refill nice and slow with some new coolant. Get some fresh il in there, new tranny fluid etc. Keep it alive.

Are you setting the climate control to auto or manual and does it show the temp. setting that you want ?

Is it possible they did something stupid like put radiator stop leak in it and blocked the system and the thermostat?
Also just check to make shure that it is not set to vent to bring in the outside air. Does it have a climate button that gives you a menu of options?

All modes, temperatures etc. It's dark and stormy here right now. So checking it out extensively with what pipe is hot etc isn't fun.

I know but it's tough to quit before you figure it out isn't it? Well, maybe you will have better luck later in the day when it gets light out. Where are you from?
By the way, Welcome to the forum!

British Columbia!

A good gem here:

"Low coolant level can affect the heater. What version of S-type is it? The 4-litre engine has an auxilliary coolant pump which might be part of the problem. Cooling system bleeding - JTIS says to open the the engine air bleed valve (I couldn't find one on my 3.0 V6 so I disconnected the engine end of the narrow tube going back to the expansion tank instead) and fill the expansion tank until coolant flows from the bleed valve and the expansion tank is full. Then close the valve and fit the expansion tank cap. Start the engine and set the heater to 29 degrees C (I'd just leave the dual-zone valve connector unplugged instead). Allow the engine to idle for 5 mins adding coolant to maintain the cold fill level then increase the engine speed to 1500rpm for 3 to 5 mins or until the heater blows hot air"

New thermostat, no fix. Unscrewing the coolant cap produces ZERO boild over. I should have been burned. I must have a coolant problem. If the car sits for a bit there isa bit of warmth, then stone cold once moving.

Update: It was the heater valve.

Took the heater valve apart in the car. Ugly. Gross. Don't ever do it with it still on the car. I would dissuade anyone from rebuilding the valve, buy new -swap it out.
I snapped 2 bolts putting it back in due to a valve not going back in right and it leaks like a sieve. Overnight Fedex part now.
The valve had 1mm of up/down play and was obviously jammed shut. Part will be here in 48 hours and the old part comes off tomorrow night.

I'm beginning to wonder how clueless the seller really was. I'll bet they knew what the problem was and just didn't want to pay to have it fixed. I'm sure it would be very expensive at the dealer. It's a good thing you are able to fix it yourself. Now you will have a nice car for a good price and a little self repair plus the experience!!
Good luck and keep us posted were all pulling for ya!

I have the same problem with my S, but I live in Miami, so who cares. LOL! I've tried it all. Changed the coolant...more than once. Been patient with it but to no avail. If you find a solution let me know, because the winter is coming, and well...the temp might drop to 60* F LOL

Replaced the valve, still no heat. Thermostat is good, coolant is good. Might just dealer it.

Let me know man! Sorry you're having so much trouble with this. My suggestion would be...move to Miami! Seriously, I'll try and take a look at it this weekend, but most likely won't have time, so maybe the next. If you do figure it out though, let us know!

I just moved back from Turks & Caicos! And my damn Mitsubishi there had the A/C compressorpack it in. Can't win!

UPDATE:

I drove up the big hill here beside my house to hit up the chevron at the top, all of a sudden - whoosh. HEAT. Car is perfect now. Just needs a detail. Welcome to Jaguar country, finally.

Sounds like it was an air bubble in the system. Lucky, lucky lucky... Gald it worked out so well for you! If the problem comes back, it is probably your water pump.

So that's the solution you have for me? Drive up a hill? We don't have those here in Miami

Maybe if you accelerate and then brake sharply it'll be just like a hill
